I've heard that for in-state applicants, UMich absolutely requires the ACT and that the SAT is optional. This seems strange, but I'd like to check just to be sure. Is it true?

No, they take either one.

No. Where did you hear that?

You can take either one. It’s just that in-state applicants usually submit their ACT because that’s the one they are all required to take and most times, the only standardized test they take. But certainly, if you do better on your SAT vs. ACT and send it, they will not punish you in any way.

Everyone in Michigan has to take the ACT in March of their junior year in order to graduate. That’s why a majority of people apply with it.

The University of Michigan does not require the ACT. The SAT is a perfectly (and equally) acceptable alternative/substitute.

OK, thank you all for the help.
