ACT vs SAT

I've taken the SAT as a seventh grader and scored pretty well. I haven't taken the ACT yet but I am not too great at science.

Based on your experiences, which test is harder? I know is this is pretty generic question that differs from person to person but just wanna hear peoples' opinions.

PS I am a freshman so I don't need to worry about standardized testing for now

I would say the SAT is the harder of the two standardized tests. I say this, because I scored a lowly ~1800 with no prep. I took the ACT and got a 29 with no prep; albeit, the science section was definitely tricky. I had to understand how to approach it really well before I got a 32 on the exam. I didn’t really prepare much for the math or the reading/English sections, because I figured the classes I took at school were enough to prepare me. I’ve taken only honors and AP English and math classes throughout high school too, and I’d say they’re enough prep so long as you actually pay attention in them!

The science section is really hard to prepare for, all I did was look at a multitude of practice questions for that section. I had no clue how to study for it (science is not my forte), so the best I could do was familiarize myself with it. I still did pretty bad though, ended up with a 27/36.

For me, the SAT and ACT were about the same difficulty, but the ACT was slightly easier. On my first try (without prep) of the ACT, I got a 34, as compared to a 2260 SAT without prep. My 34 ACT translated to about a 2200 SAT, so there wasn’t much difference in my first attempt.

However, I had to take the ACT again for the state-required testing, at which point I scored a 36 (still without prep). When considering the writing score, that’s a 2320 SAT.

The science section really has nothing to do with science - it’s more about quickly reading over and processing information to answer questions. I’ve found that the most important thing for the science section is time management.

ACT was a lot easier for me although I did have trouble with the essay.
I find that ACT essays are more personal (my prompt was ‘should students be allowed to post negative things on the internet about their teachers?’) and not as literature based which was difficult for me.

ACT CR is a lot easier which is a section I struggle with on the SAT. I actually took the ACT blind and I was pleased. I probably could have scored a lot better if I had practiced some essays before I walked in.

Science isn’t too difficult…just don’t spend too much time reading the experiment description because you’ll run out of time. Just skim the experiment so you get the gist of it and move on to the charts and graphs.

As a person who has taken the SAT twice (along with countless prep tests), but has only just taken his first ACT prep test, I’m inclined to say that, to me, the ACT is more difficult. It depends on the person, but for me the ACT questions and the test itself is more exhausting and challenging. It could be because I’m so used to the SAT questions.

Going by section, I’d say that the math on the ACT is much easier than on the SAT, and the CR could also be considered easier. The English portion is more difficult on the ACT than the SAT’s writing. I think that the ACT could benefit from having the English portion, and maybe a few others, divided into separate sections like the SAT.

SAT > ACT any day of the week. And that is coming from someone who scored substantially better on the ACT than SAT. Though colleges say they view both tests evenly, I highly, highly doubt it.

The science section really doesn’t require much background in science as every answer can definitely be drawn from the passages however a good background can help. In a ACT practice test i took (a released one) there were 2 physics questions that involved writing formulas that describe the relationship between currents and resistance but i was able to get them without reading the passage as im in AP physics b

…I personally think the SAT is easier.

But that is due to the fact I had a craptastic trig teacher.

I have no issues with time constraints on the SAT, but the ACT’s just get me.
