ACT with Writing or Without

First post Here, so please be gentle.

I originally took the ACT and got a 28 overall, with math and science being my lowest subjects. Ironically, those are my best subjects in school. I am going to be signing up late for the Sept. 12 test.

My question is if I should retake the Writing portion. I heard that it is very different, and I received a 10 on my first ACT for writing. My dream school is the University of Michigan, but I am worried that If I receive a higher score, a.k.a a 30-32, it will be disregarded because I did not take the writing portion over again. I also do not want to bomb the writing portion this time because of the format change.

P.S I received a 5 on my AP Language Test, So I am fairly confident in my writing ability.

Your score writing score will not be disregarded.

Although the U-M does require the ACT with writing or SAT test result from one complete test sitting, you may re-take the ACT without taking the writing section again. Please note, however, that the University of Michigan does encourage students to take the complete test again if they choose to re-test.

Thanks. I opted for the no writing portion.

I scored higher in all sections except for english, in which I went down 2 points. overall I got a 30.

@AverageJoe22 I’m in the same boat as you. I got a 28 my first time with a 10 on writing. This time my English went down 4 points and my Composite was a 29.25= 29. I opted for writing this time.

Good work @averagejoe22 ! Thanks for letting me know how you did.

Thanks. HeretoHelpYou.

Also Sgallagher. It seems like a lot of people went down in english. Wonder why.

I am currently in a pre engineering high school program, technically manufacturing focused. I am also taking courses in a community college.

In regards to that, my high school offers all community college courses for free during high school. We can take quite a few credits, and they support a program that allows a 13th year with college paid for at the local community college. So I could easily go to that community college for free, and there is a “2 years at this community college and 2 years at a well known engineering school” program I could enter. I either want to go into electrical, environmental, or chemical engineering

I still need to start applying and getting ready for everything, but school seems so chaotic. Plus I could just attend the community college if wanted, and it is pretty challenging.

I am applying to see if I could receive any full rides or merit scholarships, but I do not think my score is high enough for that. I may retake in november, and actually study for the test next time, or try to bring up my 27 in math and return my english score.

On another note, is there any chance for me to get any full rides with scores that low? I will create another thread later.

I plan to attend in State in Michigan. I will apply to most good colleges and by that I mean Michigan State, U of M ann Arbor, Kettering, Michigan Tech, Lawrence, Northern, maybe LSSU

also Alma, Kalamazoo, free application
