As we prepare for the application process I have noted that UNC requires the ACT with writing. My son has taken the ACT twice. 1st time with writing and received a 33 (as a sophomore) and the 2nd time w/o writing (Junior year) and got a 35.....my question is will UNC consider the writing score as well as the 35 on the second test, or will he need to retake the test again this October to ensure the 35 (one hopes) ... with writing. Thanks!

UNC superscores the ACT. Send both, and they’ll use his best subjects from the two sittings to compile new scores for him, including the writing from the first test.

thanks so much !

My son’s two ACT composites are both 34 - superscore 35. The bad thing is most of his schools do not superscore and he has not taken the ACT with writing. Two of his schools require the ACT with writing. This is putting pressure on a great fall ACT with writing. Anybody had experience with general rules about whether schools will pull the writing score and tack it onto the other composites? It would be disappointing to get a lower ACT in the fall and not be able to take advantage of the previous good ones.

The ACT Writing doesn’'t factor into your composite score. It’s separate. So it should be able to be combined with prior ACT’s, although when superscoring they may take the combined English/Writing and use that even if it’s lower bc it includes writing.
My sister applied to some schools that required writing and they wouldn’t accept her composite w/o writing and then her writing score separately… but I believe they used to use the writing section as part of your composite, and now they don’t.
