I did the counterargument but does it really tell you to do it in the directions? I had been told by my tutor that it is necessary to include one but the directions only say “you may write about either one of the two points of the view given, or you may present a different point of view on this question” I know you have to write a counterargument but its kind of stupid that they don’t include it in the directions isn’t it?

It is. The ACT does a lot of stupid things lol.

yeah, thats what i think! unless it says to do it in the directions, they cant penalize you for not including it if the rest of your essay is sufficient. its not like they can just rely on the review books many people buy to tell you…

yeah, like i read the instructions for the practice essays, which I’m assuming are the same directions as the actual test, and they don’t say anything about a counterargument so I don’t understand how they expect people to know about it

But they don’t tell you that in order to actually do good on the science section you should actually read the passages (other than the conflicting vewpoints) either lol, buI that’s what you need to do to succeed. Sometimes I think they WANT people to do bad.

thats true…i guess they just assume that you have already learned it. Like i know that in my ap history class my teacher told us that if you take a position 25% of your paper should show the opposite of your actual position. I never would have thought of that, but i guess they expect you to

luckily the essay isnt factored into your composite score! and i mean as long as you do well in english and write good college app essays, i think thats enough for you to prove youre a good writer. one of my classmate’s brother is “the best writer she knows,” was first in the state for this improv speech thing (where you take a position on something and literally have about a minute to come up with your speech; needless to say, you must be a good writer), and his best essay was an 8.

oh wow! yeah, hopefully it doesn’t matter that much! I feel like the writing section is usually factored in least by colleges. Like i know on the SAT some schools don’t even consider it. a 30 minute essay isn’t a good indicator of your abilities as a writer i feel.

^exactly. plus, the graders are harsh! my ap lang teacher has given my impromptu essays 9s (perfect ap scores) before (and he has experience with the lang test), ive been told by 3 of my teachers im a “really great writer,” and yet i cant seem to EVER score above an 8! hopefully this time though :)

yeah same! my tutor always gave me 11s on all my practice SAT essays but on the actual test i only got an 8! and i thought it was a strong essay:( but hopefully this time for both of us! good luck:)

I put in a lot of jokes this time so I hope I get higher than an 8. I referenced Ghadafi lol.

do a lot of the 12s have jokes?

and lol, i hope it works! :)

I have no idea lmao. I hope so too. I said “Although the teens are unlikely to take up arms against the Ghadafis of their house, it’s certain that they will, in some way, rebel”. I’m going to be really mad if it’s an 8. Even if it’s an 8, I want some consturctive criticism. The one from last month said "It was a really good essay, well sturctured, and with lots of specific examples."It’s like, then why didn’t you give me a freaking 12 lol?!?

hahah, wait, what? those reports give you feedback on your essays?! is it actual comments on specifically your essay, or just like a generic comment?

and did you argue for parents using the GPS?

I said something about the innately hedonistic behavior of teens. I figured big words=good score. It’s always worked for me on AP (:
& I don’t remember getting essay comments in April either…

Nope, I argued against. What about you?

And no, it’s on the normal score report you receive in the mail. It’s generic comments but specific to your essay.

EDIT:
I’m not sure, but I think the comments partr is optional for your scorers

I had the GPS prompt as well. My last sentence was “Sometimes, it’s best if Big Brother (or Big Mom, or Big Dad) isn’t watching you.” ;)

I felt really good about the essay in general. I talked about teen maturity, GPS system cost, good parenting, the potential for data abuse, and, of course, 1984.

^ I LOVE IT!!! I wish I would have thought of that line lol!

I used Anthem instead but considered 1984

hahaha, good ideas, both of you guys!

i just went in-depth on the implications, especially strained relaitonships and sheltering. i used the more broad example of college kids getting into trouble and abusing new responsibilities due to a lack of prior exposure.

^ Are we still talking Harvard kids? Because that IS hard to believe (lol, jk
)
