ACT Writing Scorers Are Making MAJOR ERRORS

Wow, that’s ridiculous indeed. smh.

My son took the April 2016 exam and got: composite (30), english (27) and reading (32). However, his writing score is only an 18. Writing is not his strength, but he did study the new format, practiced using the few prompts available and felt he did fairly well. Has anyone else received their April results and feel that the ACT is still having scoring issues?

Sent check 3/1 for February test, check cleared 3/17, got a new score 4/21 but it increased only by 1.

@Lindsey2000 – if you read through this thread you will see that some scores have been dramatically changed while others (my DD) didn’t change at all. If you don’t mind gambling $50 you can request a rescore. I

I got a 33 in writing after scoring a 12, 11, 12, 12. 47/48 points = 33? I emailed them and they made it sound like I was in the wrong.

Any updates on how the restore turned out?

On the February test, I got a 34C and 27W. I got the writing section rescored, and six weeks later, my score showed up as 28. If you have any doubt whatsoever about your writing section score, definitely pay for the rescore! I honestly wasn’t expecting a rescore, but since I got 32W the first time I took the ACT, I felt a little unsure about the 27.

Hey so I literally just found this thread but I am a pretty decent writer and I got a 29 (and I thought it was hard) on the October ACT, but 22 on the December one in which I got a 33C and all of my sub scores increased. A bunch of smart kids in my school were also getting scores in the 19-23 range. Is it too late for me to ask for a rescore for the December test?

@smilingalong Wow, you have great scores in all domains. I don’t quite understand why the writing score is only 33. My D has 11 in all her domain scores and writing score is 32, and we already think it was not correctly calculated, or was it?

Congratulations to all those who are getting positive outcomes on rescores! Unfortunately we weren’t so lucky-- despite english and reading scores of 35, writing score was 20, and our rescore request failed to improve that number. It doesn’t make sense but clearly rescore will not help in all cases.

Need advice–my D got a 35 composite on the April ACT (36 English, 34 Math, 35 Science, 33 Reading), but a writing score of 26. When she took it in October she got a lower composite (32) but a higher writing (28). The one time she took it with the old writing test she got a 10. Does her 26 seem enough out of line that I should pay to have it re-scored? Can the colleges see that it has been rescored? She has not sent her ACT scores to any colleges yet–we wanted to wait and select which scores to send.

Thanks for any advice!

@smcirish – hard to say if a writing score is “enough out of line”! The only downside of requesting a re-score is possibly losing $50. I think that the request is transparent to colleges, etc. I’m with @youngbeck in that my DD did not get an adjustment in her re-score but I think I’ve heard of many more people on here receiving a better score. Again, if you don’t mind spending the $50 then go for it and good luck!

@payn4ward recently posted on the parents of 2017 thread that several colleges (so far) are making the essay portions optional, perhaps due to the variability seen in scores and rescores.

I’ve decided not to stress too much about DS’ relatively low essay score.

@humanperson FWIW, the ACT has revised their essay prompts and scoring curves. A 26/36 doesn’t sound great, but a 23 and up is considered pretty strong (both in the testing community and by top colleges). And even this measure isn’t weighted too heavily given the changes, the lack of trend data due to the changes, and the many problems with the score reports.

Where r u getting info that a 23 and up is considered “pretty strong”?

How does your D think she did in the writing? Ig she thought it went well, send for a rescore. The worst thing that can happen is that you will lose $50 (like I did). You might get lucky… The dice roll may cost you $50.

That said, 26 is solid and colleges don’t care about writing now that SAT has removed it.from the total score.

If the $50 is not a hardship then you should request a rescore. At worst your score will stay the same.

This is not true for the SAT, which will only rescore if there was a scanning error. AND if the rescore is lower they will take this new score.

Good luck.

Thank you! @“Erin’s Dad”

@tedandfranks Here’s another site that claims a 23 and above are considered pretty strong.
