Do colleges even care about them that much? I know some don't even require them.
Also, what is a good score for top colleges?

I would say a 10 or higher is a good score for top colleges. However, I doubt the essay score counts for much even though some schools require it. And since it doesn't factor into the composite score, it shouldn't matter much.

Thanks for the quick post. I got a 10, so I'm happy about that. Thanks again.

My school had a statewide ACT, without the essay.

I did quite well.
I'm going to retake it because I need an essay score at most of the schools I'm applying to. If I get a worse composite, will my composite from before be looked at? In other words, can/will an AO mix a comp score from one test with an essay score from another?

^ Most scores don't mix and match ACT scores. Your ACT without writing is pretty much invalid at the schools you're applying to.

There's a thread somewhere here about colleges that superscore the ACT.
