ACT Writing Section

Hokay, so.....I got my scores in the mail today, and I got an 8 on my essay. I know nothing about how the essay is used by colleges, so.....is this a good thing or a bad thing? Does it matter that much? Will it affect my English score?

Depends...what's your English score?

What I have been told is that colleges only look at your writing/essay score to verify that you wrote your essay. Basically if you get a 6 on the essay and write this great admissions essay, it's not yours and the rest of your application might be false somewhere else. That's just what I've heard though.

i got a 35 on english but an 8 on the essay, and that makes my english/writing score a 31. will colleges see a 35 or a 31 when they look at my english score?

hey liveinlove i got the same scores as you!! im wondering the same thing too.

"If you took the ACT Plus Writing, the colleges and high school to which you have ACT report your scores will receive your Writing scores and comments along with your subject area scores and Composite.

These colleges and your high school will also have the option to access an image of your actual essay online.

Colleges may choose to review individual essays to help make admissions or course placement decisions."

That's from the ACT website, but I'm still not sure how much the writing section matters. Anyone else know?

the 8 in writing brought you down that much?! ahhh

My D got a 12 on writing and a 36 on E from June 9th ACT. But she got only a 30 on Science.
