ACT Writing

How much weight is placed on the essay score? My daughter did great in math (33) ok in science (29) fair in english (24) and poorly in reading (20) (she had time issues with the reading), but then I saw today that she got a 6 on the essay (needed more details and examples). She's normally a good writer, so this stinks!

Do you mean how much weight in calculating the ACT composite score (the writing doesn't influence this, though you do get a combined English/Reading score: a 24 English + 6 Writing = 22) or by adcoms?

Just by adcoms...I understand how it's factored into the combined English/Reading score. Thanks!

(It just bothers me that all of her other stats are so great, but she can't do well on the SAT or ACT)

I don't think that there is much public information out there about this, but have suggestions for two ways to make an educated guess:

If a college requires the Writing Section, they probably give it more weight than a school that doesn't.

The amount of weight they put on the ACT Writing probably correlates at many colleges with how they consider the SAT Writing Score. There used to be a chart on the Kaplan test-prep site listing schools where writing scores were given some, little, or no weight, but I don't see it any more.
