How does Rice look at the ACT? Like just the composite or do they place emphasis on certain subscores? Also, does the Combined English/Writing score matter much? I didn't do so well on the essay and it dropped 3 points..

I think the composite is what really matters unless you do really poorly on the math & want to be in the engineering division.

From what I have researched, they mainly look at the composite and your essay. The composite should be in the range of 30-34 or higher, and you should get at least an 8 on the essay if not more. Also, if they do look at subscores, they place more emphasis on English & Math.

Actually the ACT mid-range is 31 to 35.

Oh, my bad. I saw 30-34 somewhere else on the website, I can’t remember where. It must have been older.

Has anyone heard of or know someone that has gotten into Rice with a 28 or 29 ACT composite? (Disregarding SAT) I know test scores aren’t the only thing the admissions board look at, but at some point i think low scores will start to be detrimental to the rest of the application. Overall I submitted a very strong ED app. (ECs, GPA, essays, LORs) Except for my ACT which is a 28. I know its a stretch, but Is being admitting to Rice with that low of a score unheard of? I’d really appreciate any responses!

It’ll be pretty hard to get in unless your parent works there, you are a legacy (parents would probably have to be decently large donors as well), or you are an athlete.

I’m sure you can get in with a 28 and 29, assuming the rest of your app is stellar. It definitely won’t help, but it isn’t an automatic disqualification.

Thanks for input guys. I just wanted reassurance that it isn’t impossible haha. Besides the scores I felt like I submitted a very strong application, so we’ll just have to see!

If I already sent all my scores, do they only look at the highest composite?
