Thanks so much @actorparent1. I originally put the MT on that page. Emerson was her only MT audition. She really connected with them during a summer intensive. No one where we live or in her small school realizes what an accomplishment this is. Not even the drama teacher! I’m really proud of her. Last year was a year of anxiety and deep stress for her. We were not expecting this but it has really been meaningful for her. She loves all three programs. We have not had the easiest decade so I’m happily shocked and going forward will be less stressful…
NOW hunker down everyone for Snoooooooowwwwwwwww!!!
@Atreuh congratulations on U of IL… is this UIC ?? it’s actually a wonderful program. Most of the instructors are directors from the Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf and a few others. Wonderful Professors who have inside connections to all of what’s happening in the Chicago Acting/Theatre world. It’s not really mentioned on this site but it’s like a sweet pick if you’re here and want to work here
Congrats @laylamom such great picks you guys could just chill and not audition anymore What a great way to start the new year
Thanks, @actingdreams. It’s quite amazing what an early “yes” does for the mindset. We read somewhere a recommendation of a “less” competitive school as a first audition - it was good advice.
We will need to really check out The New School in April. Most of our impression is from the open house - where everything is shiny and perfect. We need to check the reality of the program. Any CC insider scoop is always appreciated. Happy New Year!
And congrats to @laylamom - you guys are killin’ it!
@actingdreams - thanks! This is U of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I’ve seen another parent call it UIUC. Now I know! (UIC is the Chicago campus.) We visited on Illinois Theatre Day in October. They gave the full tour, meeting with faculty & students, etc. They also held auditions/interviews for BFA acting and tech programs. Great facilities and impressive program. Good experience for S. Great to have a solid YES in the run up to auditions to come - DePaul and unifieds. BAL to all the kids & parents riding this crazy roller coaster!
Absolutely @Atreuh we’re about 5 minutes from UIC Chicago and my S. is railing against this notion (sigh) it’s just too close to home and he doesn’t want to not live in a dorm and have some sort of college experience. He actually went to summer camp here before his Sophomore and he loved it. I wish we could post photos or videos however they used 3 floors to tell stories and it was amazing! Although the directors from many of Chicago Playhouses taught there, it wasn’t enough to convince him. We still applied as a safety school. He also took part in Cherubs or NHSI heading into Junior year. it was amazing. his dorms were right across from the beach. Of course, it’s too close to home and although he knows Northwestern is an excellent program and he knows the professors very well after this, he chose not to apply (to close to home) I think it’s crazy that this campus is gorgeous! He was not even considering Urbana which would cost us ZERO Dollars but felt only a little bad that he decided not to apply (to many of his classmates used it as a safety with uic and Columbia college) I think most of the kids here aren’t grasping how amazing our city/state is because they’ve lived here all of their lives. me explaining that many students would love to come here because of whats happening. They don’t seem to care teenagers! I have 2 friends with freshmans at Urbana for BFA and they love it. BAL … We are auditioning for DePaul and if he gets in and is a top with the rest, depending on cost, I’m putting my foot down

Congratulations @DoinResearch! Its great to have some accaptances this early. I like UIC campus and they’ve really put some nice hangout places nearby recently. Great location as well
@actingdreams I like the affordability of UIC. The students and staff have been attentive for a large school, and I think there’s a gritty/scrappy feel to the building that will mimic real life after graduation. I think kid1 prefers to live away from home, but the $$ saved commuting is HUGE. Looking forward to Kid1 spending some classroom time there. Interestingly enough, when we toured, a new group tour of transfers into the theater program started. I asked where they were from, several were from Columbia Chicago, and I bet they were looking to save a few bucks. Also considering Oakton for a year, and then transferring to get out in 4 years debt free. I doubt Kid1 will get that practical. It is good to have that acceptance as we continue the process.
@DoinResearch I whole heartedly agree with you on the savings. UIC is nearby and of course being able to reside at home would be financially ideal for me but I think my kid would cringe the entire time. He actually took an acting class for the summer before the start of Sophomore year and it was an amazing experience. Also, we were introduced to 3 students who had signed with some great agents and one senior was filming a pilot and is in LA now (assuming it was picked up).
Let me know if you decide to accept and intend on going
For us, the acceptance excitement is tempered a bit until we see the full financial aid package, FA will really be the “acceptance” factor! Low debt is good for the creative kid.
