Acting BFA

I was wondering how their acting bfa is? How would you rank it compared to other schools? Do they count more on audition or academics? Thanks!

I don’t know much about their acting BFA although their dance, music and musical theatre programs are exceptional. I do know, however that the admission process at FSU is separated academically and artistically. You must apply to the University separately and receive admission regardless of your acceptance into their BFA programs. If you are not admitted academically you cannot attend FSU. At one of their auditions they did say that a borderline student who they REALLY wanted into their program could possibly be pushed through but you should make sure the school is an academic fit if you want to put it on your list. (Same rules applied to UCF.)

Most of the Florida schools are not too difficult to get into academically, with the exception of University of Florida. (We lived in FL for many years and our older son attended UCF.) I would think the audition would be the more rigorous admission than the academic.

Thanks Pohs and skipsmom. I lived in South Florida for 10 years so I know the lifestyle. It prob. is different though for Northern Florida. I was also interested in Flagler College in St. Augustine which is very beautiful. Isn’t U Miami hard to get into? I am just thinking of back up plans in case Simon’s Rock doesn’t work out.

I’ve heard Flagler college was very unique and very different from the other schools but no details on their performing arts department. U of Miami is no longer that difficult to get in to academically since that public Universities have become SO popular due to Bright Futures Scholarships that almost all Florida kids receive. I know of kids who get into UofM but not FSU…I no of a student with a 1270 SAT(math and english), 2.95 unweighted (about 3.4 weighted) who was outright rejected from FSU and UCF, not even deferred. With the economic situation as it is the Florida public Universities have become significantly more competitive. Check out the published statistics of median test scores and gpa’s of incoming Freshman they are surprisingly high.
Good luck…

Thanks Pohsmom. I may visit Flagler and it’s a good deal when it comes to money. I’m actually going to apply to an early college up in Mass soon, so I think Flagler may be a good place to transfer or a good back up plan. In Georgia, I think the Hope Scholarship is similar to the Bright Futures Scholarship. UGA has got very hard to get into and forget about Georgia Tech. You need like a 3.5 unweighted GPA for UGA, which has gotten harder over the years. I think Flagler is a great deal and I have family in Florida. :)

Florida schools have gotten rather difficult to get into academically in regards to FSU and UCF in the past few years. They have definitely upped their standards academically, like Pohsmom has said with Bright Futures and the amount of students wanting to stay in state and such. FSU has a great Acting program and they take a small number just like their MT program. You also have the option to reaudition once you attend there and are in their BA program. 2 friends of mine did not get into the Acting program their first time auditioning and went and attended FSU for BA and then both got into the Acting program the following year and now one of them was just cast in the Nat’l Tour of In The Heights as a Swing for the Ensemble/Carla/Nina/Vanessa. She graduated in '08. The program is very reputable and as a BFA Acting major you can take any dance classes you want and also work with the voice teachers that the MT students study with and I heard you can also audition for the musicals as well.

In regards to Flagler, I was looking there my senior year of high school and wasn’t very impressed. I saw a show there and it was terrible, and the technical side of it was really bad. The microphones kept going off and on and it was a very marginal production in my opinion, but the cost is one good thing, especially if you live in Florida and want to attend a small liberal arts school. And the campus is beautiful, but there is a lot of rules your Freshman year, the hardest ones for many are a curfew and gender seperated dorms with no visitation.

Thanks bird. I’m not in Florida any longer, but lived there until I was 10. Would the film program be better if I would like to do film acting? I heard you get to produce and be in your films? I’m not into dancing or singing and also have an interest in screenwriting and print journalism. What GPA do you need for an out of state student? And how is Tallahassee? I lived in South Florida, so I don’t know much about Northern Florida.

Flagler is very beautiful and that’s what I liked about it. I prob. wouldn’t do drama there though.

Flagler has an extremely limited number of majors, EC. You should check them out before you apply. Kids with very good stats can qualify for a full four year ride.

We live in GA and know people who have gotten into to UGA with an 1100 SAT but better grades (>3.7 unweighted). Their honors program purports to take kids with 1500+ SATs but we know of two who will be going in the fall (honors) with SATs in the 1200 range. Don’t believe everything you hear, or read  and apply anyway… Georgia has an excellent journalism program, which I believe is one of your interests.

I know Flagler has a journalism program, but under the communications department. I only have like a 3.2ish GPA now, lol. But I was/will be next year in all honors and one AP class. Print Journalism is one of my intrests for sure and so is screenwriting. I would get a good deal for Georgia, but not much of a southern person. Though, I bet about 200 kids from my school (grade level) will go to UGA.
