Action Plan: 720CR ----> 800

I got a 670 in May on CR....I have gotten better (improved 50-60 pts.) but now I don't know what I should be doing to score really close to 800. I am still missing about 3 vocab (i will usually omit 2 and guess on one or something), but I am going to reread DH and read PR Hit Parade and some Barron's words....so vocab should be all set.

I make 4-5 passage errors though too. I'm at about -6 to -8 in CR so my scores are low 700s.

If anyone dealt with what I am in the past and managed to get to 800 or high 700s please give me your input. Ideally, in October I'd hope to get perfect on the sentence completion (or miss 1) and make 1 or 2 errors in CR Passage based....to yield -2 or -4. If I can get to -2 then I have a shot at 800...-4 would be high 700s and I'd me content.

So, please post on here or PM me or anything. I just don't know what to do to improve more....just more practice tests? ALSO, the old english (early 1900s) passages mess me up. I hate them because I have a trouble understanding the language at some parts...so how can I improve this? I really do well and like the science passages and ones that are like stories and are interesting.

MY CURRENT METHOD: Just read it through once (on some passages that are interesting I read it once and like absorb everything so I can answer most q's without even referring back...but on others I go back and reread and answer). I don't mark up anything. I tried the mark up strategy before and it was decent, but does it really make a big difference?

“I hate them because I have a trouble understanding the language at some parts…so how can I improve this?”

Read books a lot. There are so many ways in which authors obfuscate a piece of text to make it seem more complex than it really is. Either you know them, or you took AP Lit :p

Hey I got the same exact CR score as you in May and am also reaching for high 700’s. So far I have only taken 1 practice test, but things are looking bright. :)

^^ Lol. It seems you obfuscated some text too.

Just read books that were written in the early 1900s.

i am in the same predicament as you are viggy! has anyone PMed u?

Because I have severe ADD (not really, but it seems like it lol), I can barely keep myself engrossed in the long passages, so what I do is go through the questions and mark the parts of the passage that pertain to each question and as I read through the passage, I answer the corresponding questions, in other words, read the passage in sections and answer the questions like that.
It’s pretty hard to read an insanely long passage and then answer questions pertaining to the beginning of it, so the method above is more efficient.
Also, there’s some thread on here about improving CR, look for it in the “Best part of the Sat forum” or something thread

But how can I read enough to get my score to high 700s by the Oct. SAT? Also, is there any book you guys suggest…anything that you found to be really helpful for the SAT?

OR should I just try to read The Economist or Times?

I have read less than 20 books my whole life probably so I really don’t like reading too much unless it’s a really good book. But I’ll try if it will help my SAT score lol…I was hoping to get to high 700s with barely reading my entire life ahahha

@zier, no one has PM’ed me.
@Mikethechimp, I don’t have APs here and my education system is ZERO help for the SAT…like seriously, doesn’t help at all

^ Reading probably is going to be too inefficient and would likely not yield tangible results in the given time. Just continue with the vocab and taking practice tests.

Man I am in the same situation as you. It seems we have made the same ammount of progress over this summer. What are your overall scores right now? Also, to be honest, I am just doing more tests for CR passages. I’m at around -6 at this point as well.
