Active Duty Trying to Transfer: Preparation and chances at UC (Japanese Studies)

Hey all,

It's a little early for Fall '10 admissions I suppose but I've got to decide on this pretty soon.

I'm in the Air Force and have about a year left before I separate so it's about that time to start thinking about what I want to do with my life after I get out and I want to put Uncle Sam's GI Bill dollars to work. I joined right out of high school after being admitted to UCSD as a Japanese Studies major and realizing I couldn't come up with the $$$. So after 3 years of working with computers (the only job I found interesting in the big book of specialties they put in front of me) and a couple programming classes, I've realized that I don't really want to do what everyone else around me seems to wants to major in (Computer Science) Unfortunately since I'm stationed in Europe it's hard to get classes relevant to that major; University of Maryland University College only seems to be interested in putting together classes for management or computer science majors around here and they're pretty much the only game in town aside from University of Phoenix.

My question is...will I be able to transfer as a East Asian/Japanese Studies major with these stats?

Completed (26 semester units):
Intro to Problem Solving and Algorithm Design - A
Intro to Programming (Java) - A
Intro to Biology with Lab - B
Composition and Literature - A (this is listed as ENGL102, with 101 as the requirement so I think this should be equivalent to second semester of writing; see below)
Elementary Japanese I - A
Elementary Japanese II - A
Principles of Macroeconomics - A
Calculus I - A

This summer I will be deploying to the desert so I can't take too many classes but I hope to finish 2 more classes for 6 more units:
Intro to Asian Studies
Intro to Sociology

And in the fall/spring semesters:
Principles of Microeconomics
Intro to Cultural Anthropology
2 other classes for 3 units each

AP exams: European History (4), US History (4), American Gov't (4), English Language (4) - from what I can tell this is a total of 18.6 semester units for APs; English language should fulfill the first semester of writing so ENGL102 should be good enough for the second semester right?

I'm a bit apprehensive as, again, class selection is quite limited around here. I know I don't quite meet the requirements as far as semesters of Japanese taken but I read somewhere that there's a summer program at UCB that's 4 hours a day, 5 days a week and catches you up on a full year of language. UCSD also has something on their website that says if I have to start with second-year Japanese, it'll either take 3 years or I have to do 1 year of study abroad. Will that be something I can do? And are these two the only UCs that do that?

My current GPA is 3.846 and assuming I can pull off A's in the rest of my classes, I'll finish with a 3.909 and, if I did the math right, 62.6 semester units. Realistically, what are my chances and my options? Also, I know I meet a lot of the requirements for USC so I'm probably going to apply there too (maybe even Marshall as apparently I have the reqs for that too)

Thanks for any help!

PS: I don't know if it matters but I had a 3.3 in HS and I got a 1520 on my SAT under the old system (I happened to take it the last time before they switched it to the 2400) Also I don't have too many ECs like a lot of the threads I've seen here as I have what pretty much amounts to a full-time job+.

ima nihongo o benkyuushideirun de su ka? With the info you provided. I think you have a decent chance for Cal, UCLA and USC. They will not look at your highschool records(GPA+SAT) for admission. But you have to send in your highschool transcript once you are admitted.

Kahn1988 - Thanks for the response! My last class was actually in Fall '08 so at the moment I'm trying to figure out how to schedule another Japanese class which is looking pretty impossible.

I don't think East Asian Studies is an impacted major at any of these schools but will they still hold it against me that I don't have all of my Japanese classes completed prior to transfer? As far as I know, it's 2 years of foreign language and my school only offers 3 total; I can't fit that third one into my schedule until maybe Spring '10 if at all, assuming it's offered.

What I really want to do is East Asian History/Archaeology. Should I focus on taking anthro classes and try to get accepted as an Anthropology major instead?
