Hello all I am currently active duty in the military set to get out next year. I'm trying to transfer from my current CC to a 4 year university.

Hispanic male, Age 23
Current school: Local California CC
Intended major: Computer Engineering
High school gpa: 82/100 (horrible I know)
College gpa: Hopefully 3.79 (still waiting on grades from a class)
SAT: 1860 (not nearly as good as I hoped)
Current courses: Calculus I, College English 102, General Chemistry II w/Lab
ECs: Guitar teacher for local kids in church
Hooks: Hispanic, 1st person in family to go to college, parents were immigrants from Mexico.
Great essays, great recommendations (One from my chemistry professor, one from my military commanding officer)

Colleges applying to:
UT-Austin
UI-Urbana Champaign
Purdue
USC
Texas A&M
UW-Madison
Ohio State
Rutgers

In-state for the Texas schools, OOS for everything else. I'll be using my GI Bill to pay for tuition so I probably wont be applying for FAFSA if that makes any difference. Please chance guys! Thanks in advance, and I chance back!

I’d say you’re most likely in at USC, at least a Spring Grade Request if you aren’t admitted right away. I assume 102 is the second series for your Eng Comp requirement?

I’m no expert, but things look in line at least for UT Austin and Texas A&M.

Otherwise, I think your biggest issue would be how much the OOS public schools prefer in-state kids. But, your position looks fairly strong, anyway.

robertrulez: hahaha, its an old nickname my friends gave me, I dont really look mexican, all my friends would swear I’m spanish even though my parents are from mexico

saxatransfer: thanks! UT and A&M are my top choices

Active duty military trumps pretty much all else. Bonus points if you were in Iraq/Afgahn. Texas A&M loves the military, ditto Purdue. A high school SAT/GPA will matter very little at this stage of the game, but neither one is shockingly bad-the SAT in particular is “good enough”. Also, ‘hispanic’ earns you a few bonus points, as does ‘first generation.’ My dad was active duty military and he went to USC and A&M. Under the circumstances, I can’t see you getting rejected anywhere but the most liberal left wing of schools. Good luck, and let us know where you go!

If you have not asked this in the Veterans sub-forum, you should. It is hidden (don’t ask me why) under the heading “Specialty College Admissions Topics” inside the Admissions Forum. The posters there are the ones who understand you situation and can give you the best advice.

You also should take your money questions to the Financial Aid Forum. It is my understanding that many veterans qualify for Pell grants based on their FAFSA results. Right now it looks to you like your GI Bill will cover everything, but it may not. If you qualify for any other aid as well, it will make a difference.

Thanking you for your service, and wishing you well in civilian life!

Love the Spaniard by the way! Happydad’s family is Cuban originally from Galicia in Northern Spain. Happykid is the blondest Latina at her college.

OMG, my family is Mexican originally from Galicia also, right in the region between Spain and portugal. My last name is actually the name of a village in galicia. Small world!
