Active shooter / Wednesday morning

Students got text message alerts.

"September 28, 2010 at 9:05 am

The university is open.

Active shooter reported: last seen at Perry Castaneda Library (PCL) and UTC. UTPD responding. Stay in place, lock doors."

The university is NOT OPEN.

I don’t even know what UT means when they say it is “open” - this is just what the emergency site is saying right now.

There now - this is better

Yeah. Word from the police chief is that they will soon open up north campus, but south will remain locked down until surrounding buildings are swept. Classes are cancelled for the rest of the day.

Just saw this in the Dallas paper.

[Student gunman dead at UT-Austin; no other injuries, suspects reported | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News](http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/092910dntexutshooter.139bcc736.html)

So glad that no one was hurt. I feel sorry for the people who were sitting in their 8 to 9:30 classes for hours.

Where the heck did a 19-year-old math major from Austin get an AK-47?

My roommate and a few other friends were all stuck in Jester for 3 hours. Poor kids! luckily I was off campus.

@MidwestMom2Kids_ You can buy the semi-auto AKs at gun stores. I had an 8am class in the UTC. Sucked…professor lectured for hours lol.

I guess I have to go gun shopping more often!

Only in Texas would the shooter’s high school principal’s statement include the shooter’s class rank.

FYI: [UT shooting: Stress prompts need for counseling for people nearby](http://www.statesman.com/news/local/ut-shooting-stress-prompts-need-for-counseling-for-943097.html)

“Traumatic events like Tuesday’s can breed any number of emotions, said Fonda Latham, a trauma counselor at the Samaritan Center for Counseling and Pastoral Care. And over the next few days — or months — those directly or indirectly affected by the shooting could face mild to severe mental health effects.”
…

Help available

UT is offering psychological services to those who need them. Staff and faculty members can make appointments through the Employee Assistance Program at 471-3366. Students should call the UT Counseling and Mental Health Center at 471-3515.

Does anyone know when they will reopen PCL?

Word is tomorrow everything will be back to normal.
