I'm starting on the "activities" 1000 character common app essay, and I was wondering if I had to write it about a typical "resume" activity such as my time volunteering at a hospital, or if I could do it on something I enjoy doing in my spare time such as guitar or kayaking. I've never done either of those those two things competitively or in any sort of group setting as colleges typically look for, but I could probably craft a good essay out of them since they are the type of things that I enjoy doing with my free time.

Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot from my time at the hospital and I think I could write a good essay on that too (I would probably focus on the important but neglected aspect of communication in healthcare, which could be unique?). Since I'm applying as premed this might even make more sense, but I was just wondering if there is some flexibility here.
