How many activities do people normally participate in? I've heard that clubs/organizations in college require more time commitment, so what's a reasonable number of activities to pursue?

It really depends on the nature of the activities. At my university, certain organizations really can consume your life and become the only extracurricular that someone participates in. On the other side of the spectrum, some meet once a week or even less frequently. I think as a general rule, it’s good to take it easy at the beginning and not get involved in more than one or two activities and, if you find that manageable, add things on. Make sure you have a very clear idea of the time commitment and expectations of the organization. Otherwise, you might find yourself in a somewhat overwhelming situation trying to balance classwork, extracurriculars, student job, etc. Essentially, you won’t enjoy any of your activities if you’re drowning in them.
