If I played varsity football 3 years, and JV football 1 year, do i waste 2 lines for this? And if I don't want to use a line on just JV Basketball 1 year, would it seem like i only did basketball for 3 years? What are other people doing with non-varsity sports?

has anyone else had this same problem? should i just check all of the boxes
9-12

There's probably a better way, but - maybe put "Football" as the EC, and then in the Positions/Awards/Honors section write "JV 9, Varsity 10-12".

use additional information section...

edit: i changed my mind ...im with quaere too..haha

I'm with quaere on this one

There's no way to just put football on the common app....for all sports it says only "varsity athletics - (sport)" or "athletics-non-varsity" which takes up 2 different lines. If you play 3 sports like me, that's 6 lines for JV and varsity. I talked to a college admissions officer who explained that "varsity" athletics referred to high school team sports, while "athletics-non-varsity" referred to sports done outside of school, like tae-kwon-do, equestrian, etc. So check all grades for varsity football. They ask how many varsity letters you received, so indicating 2 or 3 shows you played some JV.

So even if I was JV every year, I list it as "varsity athletics," but then I don't list any varsity letters? Or should I put "JV" in that space?

Since you don't have any varsity letters, I'd put JV and the grades you played next to it. If I had thought of doing that I would have, but my apps have already gone. I just listed my varsity letters so hopefully it's clear that I played a year at JV. I did look up varsity in the dictionary after I talked to admissions counselor, and it does mean "related to school" athletics.
