Activities your kids are plan to pursue in Summer 2009

Given the poor economy, many corporations that used to offer Summer Internships in NJ are no longer advertising for these positions this year. I suspect the situation is pretty much the same in other states as well.

What are your kids planning to do next Summer given the dearth of internships?

Daughter wants to apply for a job at Barnes and Nobles. Son is going after internships. Companies may not be going after interns but one can still beat the bushes. It doesn’t hurt to check the corporate websites career areas for posted jobs.

If that doesn’t pan out, then he’s interested in taking a course or two.

I think son is going to not work (my suggestion) and study for LSAT.

My DS is saying he wants to study for MCATs. Therefore, he would rather not work.
I am encouraging him to consider combining some other activity (ie part time work or volunteering) with MCAT prep. since I hardly think anyone is going to study 24/7 through Summer holidays.

D1 has an interesting finance course in NYC offered by her school, 3 weeks of lecture and 3 weeks of internship at a financial company, then she is off to Australia in July for 4 months to study abroad. Hopefully the finance program will help her get an internship the following summer.

I saw a posting for a Finance internship at a local company (it’s a huge international engineering firm) this weekend so it looks like it went unfilled. The deadline for application already passed. There are internships out there but companies aren’t rushing to schools to get them filled.

My daughter is applying for unpaid internships as well as paid ones. I think that the economy has probably diminished her chances of getting a paid internship, but unpaid internships should still be a realistic possibility. There are usually quite a few unpaid internships available in Washington, DC, at various government agencies and nonprofit organizations. We live within commuting distance of Washington, so she could take an internship there without having to pay for housing.

My D is thinking of applying to a couple of different things. A science related internship (the thing she really wants but it is iffy as they give preference to rising seniors and she is a sophomore - but worth a try), the service project she worked on last summer, a couple of other options. All paid hopefully as she needs the money.

Daughter will be working (hopefully) in our touristy town saving money for her freshman year. Son is at NEU and will be on coop but is working in an unpaid position starting this week because there were huge cutbacks on paid positions.
I have spoken with lots of college age kids who are concerned about finding internships.

My son would love to do an internship but will be spending his summer at the community college. His BFA requires 18 units a semester to graduate in 4 yrs. Due to his Learning Disabilities we had him start slow so he has some units to catch up on. This is the last summer his university will allow him to take community college classes for credit. He will probably take 2 general ed courses that will satisfy a math requirement. He is also looking into getting a single subject credential to teach high school math so might be doing some studying to take the CBEST. I also hope he willl get a part time job to earn spending money for the next school year.
My oldest who has taken time away from school is planning on going back to school starting this summer.
High school D will be riding horses and working to pay for riding horses. She also needs to find some community service that interests her.

Work!!!

D1 just told me that she’ll be working at her last year’s summer job for a month while she is taking the course in NYC. She is very lucky they’ll let her work from home with flex hours. I am also looking into getting a job for her with some friends while she is in Sydney to make some spending money.

S was fortunate to receive some early (pre-meltdown) internship offers and accepted one of them.

I’m not gloating. I know he is lucky.

S has had the same thing happen to him as well–not gloating, either. As it happens, the internship is over 11 hours away in a city where he will know no one. I am trying to be grateful in this economy w/o letting the worry/anxiety take over. Not to mention, spouse has said that many companies with offers out there could still rescind the offers because of economy. It is indeed an unsettling time for all in our country–we are hoping for a turn-around/positive upturn soon. The back-up plan has been to take a course at local uni if an internship/research position did not work out. Guess we shall see what happens!

ND AL-

Our son will also be in another state, as he was for last summer’s internship. Feel free to PM is you feel I may have information or experience that will be helpful.

Good reminder. I need to inform kid that maybe he can tour Europe while he still in Germany, and before he starts a job or phd. He needs to line up some touring friends now rather than later. Further academic work looks more likely but not desirable.

Son in LA was going to look for an internship but is now coming home to work for the same company he has worked for since a senior in HS. Lucky they have a Home Defense contract so the company is doing fine. He did not really want to come home this summer but is feeling the need to save cash. Fortunately for him the job is in software engineering and counts as an internship.

Son two may stay in Oregon. He has an offer to work over the summer in a testing facility for a tech company. He works there at school part time now. It also counts as an internship so he is lucky again. If not he will return to Montana and work for the engineering department of the City like he has the last two summers.

Montana is doing OK and, while slowing, is not seeing the huge downturn like so many other states. (So far anyway)

S1 has an interview for one internship scheduled. He hopes to be working. I think there’s another internship fair coming up in February. He knows he needs to be more proactive than he was last year and while last summer’s job paid well, and is probabably available, he’d rather do something else. I wish I knew what to do with S2. He’ll be a rising senior. I’d like him to be doing something productive, but his skills are pretty scattered. He makes a great apple pie, great origami earrings (sold well at the art gallery’s holiday boutique) and he’s pretty good with photoshop. He worked for me last summer, and I’d rather not hire him again. It’s too hard working for your Mom.

My D is hoping to work at the same municipal waterpark that employed her last summer. She already got an email they sent to last year’s employees about re-applying early.

She’s hoping that after her first year of college she can find something more interesting, though.

DD is off to Middlebury for language immersion. She wants to become competent in Italian. Unfortunately for me, the program requires a pledge to conduct everything in Italian, even to the outside world. So I will be reduced to communicating with her for 7 weeks through a translator program. sigh. I am used to the frequent texts and conversations. I think it will be worse than when she went away to college the first time.
