I vaguely recall that Brown wanted some special to be done with the activity sheet? I already made on that mirrors the sample one shown in Acing the COllege Application with its Microsoft Word tables and such… do they want a specific format, or do I just upload the one I already made into the online app?

mine is also an MS world table type thing. i never heard of doing it differently...hopefully we are both ok?

I included the abstract of my research project and about two paragraphs explaining the personal significance of my research project (what I learned, how it changed my interests, how it relates to my plans/passions). Is this ok? Will Brown ad coms read what essentially amounts to an extra mid-length essay (about 300 words or so)?

I did a resume on excel... I hate word when it comes to organizing things.

then submitted an essay on my number 1 extracurric.

Illinois-- I would send an extra letter along with an explanation of your research experience, a copy of the abstract, and a copy of the paper itself (with the abstract as a coversheet of sorts). They will take this into account, as well as forward your paper to the correct department where the person at Brown with research interests closest to what your project is on will read your paper and possibly email you. I had email communications with a professor at Brown long before RD came back (I applied RD only) about research opportunities (he had read my paper, and it was clear from his initial contact with me that it came from admissions and that he had actually gone through it).

Is sending the paper really necessary? The thing is, I worked very hard on my project, but my results were not conclusive. I'm still working on the project; it's a work in progress. Also, I REALLY want to do research in college, but I want to shift focus (right now, I'm doing cellular neuroscience. I want to do cognitive neuroscience, but it's much easier to grow cells and run immunochemical tests with them in a high school lab than it is to scan someone's brain). How would this affect everything?

But thanks for the response, modest. I included my abstract on the activities sheet, and wrote my essays explaining the personal significance of my work in terms of what I learned and how my project shaped my interests. I'm just not sure if I should include the paper too. Thanks a lot though.

It doesn't matter if your paper was non-conclusive or in a field completely separate from what you want to pursue. The paper simply demonstrates your ability to write, your ability to understand complex subjects beyond the scope that many high schoolers attempt. It's an indication of how much time you truly spent doing research (as even non-conclusive results can be thoroughly non-conclusive and demonstrative of significant amounts of work). I was quite successful one summer of research, but the next summer, in the same lab, was left with what barely appeared to be a body of work. I still sent both papers, and I still think both were instrumental to my getting into Brown. Where as it's ESSENTIAL to send the abstract, in my opinion, it's simply quite nice and telling if you send the actual paper.

Modestmelody- thank you so much so far. I'm going to drop you a short PM about a few details of the EC section and ap soon. But I'll ask one question so that anyone can respond.

My abstract is 200 words long (can't help that, it's an abstract). My little essay about the personal significance of my work (basically, what I learned from it and how it completely shaped my interests) is 450 words. So I have about 650 words about one EC, and then a page-long resume of my other activities. I think it really adds to my app... but is it simply too long?

I should note that my "Why Brown?" essay is rather large too. It's about 500 words, but 1) I spoke with a Brown rep at my school and she said that big "Why Brown" essays are fine (I told her about how long it is) and that essays matter a lot for Brown 2) My English teacher (with 20 years of experience) says that my Why Brown essay is one of the best "Why (insert school here)" essays she's read in recent years, as it is, in it's lengthy form. My personal statement is also 500 words. So with abstract, EC essay, personal statement, and "why Brown", we're looking at 1600 words of essay plus my list of ECs.

I don't think ANY of it's fluff... The "Why Brown" essay ties in heavily with my research, and the personal statement ties in with EC essay. They tie in, but don't overlap. I think it's really effective, but I'm afraid 1600 words of essay is just too much.

oh, btw, I know about computer cutoffs, and I'm just not bothering with them, because I'm mailing in my ap.

my app was huge too: abstract, 4 page resume (>.<), engineering essays, PLME essays, personal statement, why brown... so I'm sure you're ok

Yeah I've heard Brown doesn't mind big aps. I'm just a little worried that having a big EC section and a big why Brown could hurt (Brown's my top choice, I feel 150 words doesn't explain my academic interests and how Brown is pretty much the best school in the country for them). Oh well... as long as I make it good...

Btw, I am pretty sure the computer cut off thing is a complete sack of ****. Beyond that, it definitely won't hurt as long as they want to keep reading it. I'll answer the PM a bit later, I stayed up last night to buy a couple of Wiis and I've gotten 2 hrs sleep so far.

i'd say having a section that's too big is better than one that's too small. as long as you don't bore anyone... from what you've said about them, it seems like you would benefit from submitting all of those essays as they are.

AHHH! I rewrote my EC essay and now its 800 words. AHH!
