Actual Chances of Major Change to Computer Science

I was accepted today to the Computer Science + Chemistry major in LAS. However, my first choice was just computer science. Upon doing some research and looking around https://wiki.cites.illinois.edu/wiki/display/ugadvise/Want+to+Change+Your+Major it discusses that to get into Engineering B’s and above are required in technical classes. That being said, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Bioengineering are listed to be more competitive, but no further info is given.
What is the actual chance of transferring into CS? If it is low I am most likely not going to be as interested in UIUC. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What is neeeded can vary from year to year as it depends on applicant pool and spaces available. Go here for CS requirements established for those transferring in 2015 https://cs.illinois.edu/prospective-students/undergraduates/transfer-students/transferring-another-university-illinois-major A 3.67 GPA was the minimum just to be considered for transfer into CS Engineering and reality was few under 3.8 succeeded. Anyone who applies for transfer into CS from another major at UIUC should assume chances are not great.

@drusba Thanks for the info. I guess I better just hope for a solid financial aid package at another school!

Just to add to the above response, as a CS+Chem major you will have an advantage over most other internal transfer hopefuls in that you will have registration priority for the CS classes you need to take (and do well in) just to meet the baseline transfer requirements. Many students have great GPAs but just can’t get a spot in those classes.

However, it is still a big risk if your heart is set on CS in ENG. Even the best students can have a rough transition to college sometimes. There is not much margin for error in the transfer process.

@YZamyatin Thanks for the info! I will definitely have UIUC in mind if my other plans do not work out.
