really the only way to get an accurate estimate of what you can expect to spend is to put together a mock budget on a week by week basis.

i did this with a weekly allowance of $40 for day to day living expenses and entertainment, and came to about $10600 not including tuition which is already taken care of by prepaid. with tuition, it then comes out to more like $15000. i’m very certain the budget was NOT spot on, and it was intentionally frugal–i am prepared for a margin of error af maybe $1000. so ultimately, i expect my cost of attendance to be about $16000.

what expenses are you taking into consideration?

I see this as well and i wonder how 15000 is possible.

+$9800 in grant from finaid.

-5000 housing (seems about right)
-600 in books. (half.com amazon for all non-urgent books)
-1000 tuition (most already covered, this is remainder)

that is 6600 and i Have 9800 grant for fall+spring so that leaves me with 3200 to eat, or rather about 10 dollars a day.

but my parents always say to allot budget for stupid crap like a parking ticket+dumb expenses , random stuff.

I can see that maybe my financial aid wont be enough, BUT if i am careful…

BTW: does anyone here see anything i am not listing that i would need to pay for?

you’re forgetting most of the stuff they take into consideration on the cost of attendance site.

you’re going to be spending money on clothes (both washing and buying), transportation, entertainment, technology costs (buying a laptop is part of their projection), and personal items like shampoo and toothpaste.

i guess you could forgo all of those expenses, but i wouldn’t like you be the friend of someone who does.

which costs of transportation besides getting to gainesville, and my laptop still works. ;]

i cant imagine wasting too much on shampoo and other bathroom items so i guess i could allot $30 thats plenty of toothpaste.
and how often do you guys replace all your clothes?

-$5000 housing (seems about right)
-$600 in books. (half.com amazon for all non-urgent books)
-$1000 tuition (most already covered, this is remainder)
-$50 on personal products + washing clothes

…consider that some of these “costs” will be transfered from what your parents spent on supporting you.

Example: You may be paying about $5000 a year on room and board, but at home, the montly cost of water and electricity will go down since you will not be there (assuming you are moving to Gainesville).

Another great example is meals. One can assume the “actual cost” of meals (about 2-3k a year according to UF) will actually cost you about 1k since your household is buying a lot less food and cooking supplies.

clothing includes washing, and you have to pay for that.
[Residence Facilities - Laundry Rooms](http://www.housing.ufl.edu/housing/resfac_laundry.html)
assuming you wash your clothes once a week, thats going to be almost $50/year all by its self. the other clothing expenses includes updating your wardrobe throughout the year. $100 in clothes is like two pairs of jeans and some shirts. you dont buy that amount of clothing within a year?

and you’re not going home at all all year long? no winter break or spring breaks even? as for technology, there are classes that require you purchase software–which is included in the coa.

and then you dont expect to spend any money doing anything fun if it isn’t free?

Tuition: $1000(after Bright Futures)
Books: I’m not sure, but probably not much. I’m planning to go on Amazon and Half.com. ~$500
No computer costs. My laptop works; don’t need anything else, really.
Housing: About $4000
Food: 1000 - 2000
Transportation: I’m bringing my car and will drive home on holidays and whenever. ~$400?
Personal stuff: $500?

According to myufl, I recieved around 7500 in awards from the university in the spring, and I spent it all. Then again I don’t live like a monk like you guys seem to intend to.

My basic annual budget

Rent: 565 a month, so annually 6780
Tuition: 783.54 for summer (This one sucks, no bright futures in the summer), 2089 for spring, 1958 for fall, so annually 4830.
Food: Lets say I eat on 10 dollars a day (which is probably a little low, unless you like ramen). SO annually 3650.

Sum those 3 basic things up and you get 15260. Obviously I live in a swanky apartment so if you live in those dungeons they call dorms, or even a rundown apartment, your costs will be way less. Maybe you’ll skip the summer semester, so you save that 700, but then you might need to spend money to get your car fixed, blamo there goes that 700. My point is that getting to 15k is suprisingly easy. Online Poker helps.

glad this thread was bumped. my initial post was completely inaccurate; went with about 4k for tuition and 4k for housing, then lived off about $50 every two weeks plus $1200 on on campus food for the year. definitely did not spend more than 11k and lived comfortably and succeeded.

okay! well i’m enrolling in the spring 2011 term so they arent telling me any!! of this info! so i’m looking to spend around $2100 for tuition in the spring?

Really? On my financial aid reward letter its stated that the cost of attendance would be about $20,000!!! I think this is WAY off! Anyone else get this as a COS?

Those were the numbers for this past year anyways… My letter said about $20000 too, until this years numbers come out, i figure it was a good place to start
