Actually studying for it.

Hey guys, I am about to be a junior and have decided to start studying for the SAT (I know, pretty late right?). I have just finished my test masters course and I didn't really get much out of it. I got REALLY bad scores on the practice SATs (1370,1440,1600). I am basically doing bad in every section.. I have began to read the Blue Book. I decided to do the Math section first as I find it better than the CR / Writing parts.. I have just finished reading over the section for Math and for some reason I feel like I am not retaining any of the information I have just read over the past few days. I haven't taken any practice tests yet (outside of test masters). I am going to start the first one tomorrow and see how it goes. I just feel like I am not studying for the SAT "correctly", can anyone help me out here? My scores are really bad and I want to improve them.

Thanks

It’s a tricky situation. Practice makes perfect, or at least a higher score. the math is pretty basic, it’s all about taking that information and applying it to solve the problems. Some are just better at it than others. However, collegeboard tests over the same types of problems on every test, though the questions are different. If you can identify and apply the main components of the SAT math subjects then you’ll be in good shape. For writing, you need to know the rules of English, which might sound easy, but standard English and spoken english tend to be very different. Make sure you understand the basics, such as subject-verb agreement, verb tense, pronouns, etc. Then focus in more on the more complex issues. Once again, they test over the same types of problems. So if you practice a lot, you will begin to quickly recognize errors in sentences. Critical reading is by far the hardest to study because there are no exact “rules” that you can simply memorize. You’re best bet is to memorize vocabulary from one of the many SAT vocab prep books. Then on the passages, remember that the answer, though maybe not directly, is linked to the passage some how. If a choice sounds wrong or irrelevent, it probably is. Just make sure you understand what you’re reading, so you can thoroughly answer the interpretive questions that are either implied by the passage or extend beyond it. That’s pretty much it. Good luck to ya, happy studying :D

So after reading around a bit, I found out that the best solution for me is to do a couple of the practice tests and go through what I did wrong, make sure I understand why I did it wrong, and redo the tests maybe a few days later? Are the section reviews in the Blue Book that useless? I just went through the math section, I hope I didnt go through it for nothing!

Thanks
