Hello, I just developed a slight interest in actuarial science but I don't know much about it yet. Is there an actuarial science major in UVA? Or is it under maths? Is it good? And is it doable if I also want to try to get into McIntire? Thanks so much! :)

I don’t believe that we have an actuarial science major. We have math majors, and it may be a concentration within it, try googling UVA’s math dept.
Also, to “get in to” McIntire, you apply to CLAS for you first year. During second semester of your second year, while you’re still finishing basic core reqs, you also full fill the pre-reqs for McIntire. Then, you major in something within the Comm school if you get in. You can double major, but you won’t have a degree before you apply.
However, if you’re talking about getting into Darden (grad school) then math/economics/any Comm school major will serve you well, IMO.
There’s some comm school, economics, and math majors on here. Hopefully they’ll chime in…

There is no actuarial science major, but there certainly is sufficient coursework here to prepare you for the actuarial examinations.

i have a friend that wants to be an actuary and is majoring in financial economics

So I just re-read my post and realized I wasn’t very clear. You apply to CLAS when you apply to UVA for admissions; then, you spend the next two years full filling basic reqs for CLAS and pre-reqs for McIntire. Then, second semester of second year, you apply to McIntire. You never really “apply” to McIntire when applying to UVA, and you certainly don’t apply for a certain major.

Thanks everyone for the repl ies. I tried googling in the Math Dept before I posted this thread, and couldn’t really find what I was looking for. So you can choose Actuarial Science concentration if you take Maths as your major?

I mean did you even try going to math.virginia.edu, seriously, then you click on undergraduate and then on ‘major information’ and then you see the 5 concentrations, geez

… Firstly, yes I’ve been there before. And now I’ve followed your navigation and still don’t see the link. Perhaps you can help me copy paste it here, thanks.

(If you’re too impatient for us newbies you can choose to skip this thread, thank you.)

[Program: Mathematics - University of Virginia - acalog ACMS™](<a href=“Program: Mathematics - University of Virginia - Modern Campus Catalog™”>Program: Mathematics - University of Virginia - Modern Campus Catalog™) theres a financial math concentration

also, [uva math concentrations - Google Search](<a href=“Google Search”>Google Search) would have also been a good thing to try

Yes, there is a financial concentration in the math department and the econ department. The requirements are rigorous, and the requirements in the econ department are very specific.

Math major (Scroll down to “D. Financial Mathematics Concentration”): [Program: Mathematics - University of Virginia - acalog ACMS™](<a href=“Program: Mathematics - University of Virginia - Modern Campus Catalog™”>Program: Mathematics - University of Virginia - Modern Campus Catalog™)

Economics major (Scroll down to “Concentration in Financial Economics”): [Requirements for Declaration of a Major](http://www.virginia.edu/economics/major.htm)

Oh great! Thanks hazelorb and barboza! So in your opinion, which one is better in general, Financial Maths or Financial Economics??

Haha this is so exciting, looking at all the possible majors in UVA.. :D

everyone i know doing one is doing the other, including barboza ;)

There are quite a handful number of students majoring in both majors, but declaring the financial concentration in both is a different story. Basically, for the financial concentration in math, you have to take classes in the comm school, etc, and there are just more specific requirements.

For the financial economics concentration, you have to take econometrics and pass with a “B” (not easy by all means because of the material) to even declare the concentration. And before you even take econometrics, you have to take linear algebra to grasp a better understanding or you will be TOTALLY LOST in the class. I would also recommend taking statistics beforehand. The financial economics concentration is relatively recent, so there aren’t that many people doing it yet.

Most math and econ double-majors I know take the basic concentration for both majors. If you’re in the comm school, and are interested in financial math, I would recommend doing a commerce and math (financial or basic is fine) double-major.
