Actuarial Science Major

Anyone out there interested in Actuary as a career or already working in the field? As expected, D is starting to rethink her original Biology turned Biochemistry turned possible Computer Science choice of major…her Math skills are crazy good but she doesn’t like Economics (the little she’s had so far) and starting to research careers heavy in applied math.

http://www.beanactuary.com may help.

A specific actuarial major is not needed, but it can be a convenient check list of useful courses.

Thanks ucbalumnus…that is a great website. We have been scouring it for the last couple of days and comparing the necessary courses to the course catalog at Skidmore. The upside is that regardless of which major she eventually declares, most of her interests begin on the same path…Intro to CS, Calculus, Linear Algebra, etc, with the exception being a science class or two while she makes up her mind.

Note that the math-heavy sciences (math, statistics, computer science) do usually tend to have better job prospects at graduation than biology and chemistry, so that can be an added bonus to following her math interests. However, many of the better jobs for math and statistics majors in the actuarial and finance areas do involve some economics (she may want to look for schools where the intermediate economics courses list higher math prerequisites because that may be more interesting to her).

Get a applied math or stats degree and take actuary exams. You will need 2 or 3 exams done on graduation if you want to go that route.
