I am an up-and-coming mathematics major but am wondering whether or not to minor in actuarial science. I do not understand why actuarial science is a minor but has no business or risk management courses. Compared to other schools they do not have a serious actuarial science program. It feels like it is just focuses on statistical courses and not on the economics, finance, and computer science fields. The main courses that one would be taking would be mathematics courses. I see myself as being an actuary when I graduate and hope that UMD has great networking opportunities for me and other future actuaries. Would it be smart to switch my major to computer science and minor in actuarial science or would just self-studying the exams be a more viable option for me?

You asked this a while ago, so its unlikely you’ll probably ever read this.

Math major is sufficient to be an actuary. You’ll just have to plan out what courses to take, when to take exams, etc. You can afford to take extra because the math major itself is very small. If you have any questions you can either ask me (a double math and comp sci major) or Ida Chan at UMD for advice.
