Actuarial Science

Hi, I want to major in Actuarial Science (Concentrate in Business School, to be specific.), and I want to do a dual major or dual degree. I am choosing between math and computer science to be my second major/degree (and I have enough AP credit to finish two degrees in 4 years). What do you recommend? I want to hear some from you guys.

Math is most closely associated. You don’t really have to major in AS to become an actuary. Many math majors do.

First of all, I’m not sure why you want to double major. Most students double major because they love or are so interested in two fields that they want to study both of them, or because they are interested in the intersection of two fields. To decide to double major and then try to fill in the two slots with two different majors seems kind of a backwards way to make the decision. If you want to major in actuarial science and then take some additional classes in math and computer science, you can do that without double majoring.

But if you really want to, I see little utility in double majoring in actuarial science and math. It’d make more sense and probably be more useful to add CS as the complementary major. Or you could double major in math and computer science - actuarial science is actually a pretty uncommon major and it’s not offered at most colleges. Many actuaries majored in math or statistics or something else quantitative.

My advise to you is simple. Find the school with the best actuarial science program you can get into and fits any other criteria you might have (financial aid, distance from home etc). Concentrate on that. And to be honest, one can make the case that an accounting major would be more valuable than than CIS or math.
