Actuarial Science

Anyone considering doing Actuarial Science? Or degrees with concentrations in actuarial subjects?

Yeah, I am

Cool... So do you intend to become an actuary? Any idea about which schools offer a program that's reputable and well-received by the relevant companies? And lastly, is the competition for a place in actuarial programs very high? Thanks a lot...

Actuarial Science is not a business major.

But back the question I plan to take the first Actuarial Exam this year.

Few schools actually have a program in Acturarial Science best thing to do is find a good school and major in Actuarial Science if they have it, then major in Statistics, and if they don't have Statistics, then Major in Mathematics and take some stat/probability courses.

If you have access to the 1/24/05 issue of Business Insurance, you will find a list of the top risk management programs. Some of these likely include actuarial science. Some very strong actuarial programs are at the U of Illinois, U of Wisconsin and Drake. U of Georgia is outstanding also, but I'm not sure if they offer an actuarial major. Good luck!

Risk Managment != Actuaries. Actuaries invloves things like probability theory, mathematical statisitcs, time series analysis, regression analysis, ect. Risk Managment doesn't use more than algebra. Two compleatly different things. A good program in actuaries would be with a school with a good math/stat program.

VTBoy, Sorry if it sounded like I was equating the two. I really meant to point out a few really strong actuarial programs.

Also, many people who begin to study actuarial science attempt to transition to other career tracks in the insurance world. Perhaps exploring Risk Management or Underwriting/Loss Control/Claims would be beneficial for them. Looking at what these other schools have to offer just may help someone to fine-tune their career goals.

I know that UPenn has a course in Actuarial Science but it seems that no one ever talks about it. Same goes for the Actuarial Science program at NYU-Stern and Wisconsin-Madison. Does anyone here have any clue about the strength of these programs (not just the usnews rankings) ,how competitive it is to get into them and how well they are perceived by the actuary profession?
