Ad Coms

So you can call me ignorant but I really am confused about the whole adcom thing. So, they are admissions committee members, but why are they on this forum? Im really just extremely confused about the whole thing I guess. thanks for clearing my mind... hopefully

Adcoms are at the colleges looking at applications, but they aren't on collegeconfidential, at least not that we know of. CC does have high school students, college students and adults on it.

Oh I swear on one of the posts it said that the person posting was an adcom....

It's possible, but I've never seen anyone identify themselves as an adcom. If it was, then it was just somebody trying to be useful. I did see someone post once that they were a GC at a prep school and that they were willing to help answer questions. Remember that being an adcom doesn't mean that the person is at one of the elite colleges.

Just my opinion, but I think most of the adults on this forum have a kid already in college. Some probably have children applying this year, especially in the Parent's Cafe forum. Some may be guidance counselors.

I'm an adult who just got interested in the whole thing when my kid applied last year. This is something to do temporarily. I've read lots of college guides. The info you get on CC seems to be pretty accurate. The major differences of opinion are on how easy/hard it is to get into the extremely elite colleges, how much does being a URM help, and what is the value of affirmative action.

there's an adcom in the cornell and the JHU forum

yea jhu has the admissionsdaniel dude. and he keeps saying he wont predict chances but rather supply admission facts. if u ask me its kinda creepy. what if they're checkin out their applicants through cc. scary, but if thats the case, then i'd like to just say " whattup man, i'm the ultimate applicant, pick me :)"

people lie, too

not saying that anyone actually is .... i could have been lying when i said that

just like a dufus would.

Hey, my userid could have been admissionsharvard, but I chose something shorter.

The admissions daniel is already verified by CC. So, that's true I guess!

I really don't doubt this guy, but what do you mean that he is verified by CC?

CC checks to make sure that an admissions rep is who he/she says before that person can have collegerep as a user type. They do it that way so that we won't be deceived by someone who is only impersonating a college rep.

Admissions officers do come on this site. Benjones from MIT is an admissions officer.

If you look at the "member level" you'll see a few members with "College Rep" status. This means that we have taken reasonable steps to verify the identity of the individual as being from a particular school. Typically, college reps are from the admissions or financial aid office, though I think we have one faculty member.

Other members who say they are insiders but lack the College Rep designation haven't been vetted by us. If you encounter such an individual here in the forums, drop us a note. We discourage members from claiming to be admissions staffers, etc., unless we can verify their status.

Be aware that there are certainly incognito members from schools, and plenty of lurkers (people who read but don't post). The forums are free for all to view, and you can expect that some admissions people will be curious enough to see what people are saying at CC.

I thought you simply wanted admissions representatives to id themselves to you. I am happy to be 'verified' but I'm not an admissions rep in the sense that people talk about here.

admissions daniel is definitely confirmed. Unless I am much mistaken, I have seen him on the JHU forums too....
