I know the option for music majors to design their own major exists (Northwestern), but I have not seen it anywhere else. Are there any other schools that do this where it is available to music students, preferably BM-granting?

Lawrence University has it, although I don’t know how flexible it is. My understanding is that it involves taking their already designed theory/composition major and replacing the composition part with something else, most commonly music history, musical theater, or music therapy, all majors the school doesn’t otherwise offer.

I’m looking at the LU website right now and I don’t see anything that would say that. Sorry for the helplessness, care to point me in the right direction?

Eastman and McGill have something like that, but I believe you have to come in on a performance degree, then once you are there you can work with faculty/advisers to create a program. I think at Eastman it’s a Bachelor of Musical Arts and at McGill it’s a “faculty program” or something like that. Check the websites.

Hmm, I haven’t been able to find it on their website in my search tonight but I know I’ve seen it there before. You can try this: [Advising Questions - Lawrence University](http://www.lawrence.edu/conservatory/about/degrees/advising.shtml)

I know UMass Amherst does this, but I am not sure if they do in the music department specifically.

Firesoul17, today my friend told me his girlfriend is doing the design your own major program at Lawrence next year and even though I was unaware, I know her well enough to ask her how it works if you want me to.

At University of Michigan one similar option would be the Bachelor of Musical Arts, designed for cognate study.
