The subject of EA credential check-in has come up on other threads. There are a number of pieces of son's application that haven't yet been checked in online. Several of these were received by the office as far back as October 26. (We have a postal receipt.)

I called Chicago and managed to get through to an admissions officer. He blithely assured me the place was in chaos with "10,000 pieces of mail" floating around and that I should not be concerned about missing pieces of son's application.

When I asked how long son should wait before starting to push the panic button, he basically said this.....* We will tell you when to panic. If something is missing from the file, the adcoms will contact you at the appropriate time and tell you what to do. Until then, do not worry even if the November 8 date comes and goes. *

Don't know if anyone else out there is a worrier by nature and is pushing the "check credentials" button every now and then, but just wanted to share that information. Then again, all of you incredibly adept CC applicants may have gotten your act together weeks in advance so that your files are already complete. Unfortunately, that wasn't my son!

You can put off panic for a little while, anyway.

We had to deal with lost application bits last year (not at Chicago but at Case Western) - all the information from my son's HS disappeared and had to be faxed at the last possible moment. It was pretty exciting - and the one instance that we did not include the little self addressed postcards with everything.

Anyway, here is my advice. Mark November 8th on your calendar. Check credentials on the 8th. If not complete, mark the 15th.

Check credentials on the 15th. If not complete, call the admissions office and ask about it. If your son's hard copy essay is not accounted for yet, ask to whom you should direct another copy.

This is a very nervous time of year, but it really boils down to checking that the process is moving forward. Chicago's reassurance that they will contact your S if the application is not complete is at least more re-assuring than Carleton - who told us that they wouldn't.

There's really no need to worry. Actually, of the 9 schools DD applied to last year, Chicago was the best about verifying every single thing. We kept checking the online status, and some of the items took a couple of weeks to finally be marked "recieved". Finally, as the RD deadline came and went, they let her know that a recommendation was missing (one that should have come in the HS packet, and had made it to every other school). When she contacted them to double check and to let them know she would have the teacher send another copy, they said don't worry, we don't need it. It turns out she was accepted without it!

i sent everything in one packet. some made it and some didn't. i nearly freaked out but decided to check CC to see if there's any news on this. thank god i did. :o

Cami, you are definitely not alone. I have been checking and things are still missing from our list that I know were sent. I think they are just backlogged, and I truly believe that they will let us know if something critical is missing (in our case it is the school report...can't get very far without a transcript!)

Do they notify students who applied with a paper app? I started an online app and switched to paper...and don't have a credentials section appearing under the online form. Should I call the admissions office and ask if they have received my materials?

I think what they're doing is going through all of one item at the same time. For instance, I remember reading somewhere on the UChicago site that "as of (Nov something) ACT/SAT scores are updated." So I bet one day they'll update all the transcripts, one day all the recommendations, etc... since my counselor sent two recommendations and the transcript together yet the transcript is the only thing at the UChciago office.

I noticed they added the "Do not panic" notice this weekend sometime after I called. I have a sneaking suspicion my "frantic" but good natured call may have contributed to this note! Then again I may not be the only guilty one. There may be other frantic applicants and parents also contacting the office.

They are apparently working on the weekend. Son's transcript went up today. We're still missing an essay and a reference.

yea... my tcher's reco and high school transcripts are not in yet! my teachers sent them on 28Oct.. and i was told that it usually take 8-9 days to reach.. but it's past 8-9days already.. hmmph!
