So this past year my family has really been struggling financially and because of this I was not able to afford to retake the SAT. Yes, I know about fee waivers, but my school only gives them out for the first time you take the SAT, which for me was in Junior year. I really didn't get the score that I wanted, and I know for sure that I would have gotten a higher score if I were able to take it again. Do you guys think it would be worth it to tell colleges about my situation so that they don't look at my SAT score so harshly?

The SAT costs about $20-$25. For some families that could be a lot. But have you considered using your own money? Try babysitting. 2 or 3 hours of it will give you more than enough to afford it. Or tutor another studen. Hourly rates are about $20-$25 dollars, so 1-2 hours should be enough to raise the money you need.

If you feel it is truly too late now, I think you should just leave it and hope for the best. If you try to explain it, it could seem like an excuse and the adcoms might wonder why you didn’t try to come up with the money yourself.

Thanks for your response!

I appreciate your feedback but I already know about all that stuff and believe me, it is easier said than done. I have a job that is extremely time consuming and my paycheck goes directly to helping my parents pay the bills. When I say I have no extra money, I mean I have NO extra money. Times are just really tough right now and I don’t college admissions officers to penalize me for my financial situation.

If you explain it well, I’m sure they will understand, although I don’t know how much you being SURE you’re SAT could be higher will help…

So, how bad were your scores and what collges are you interested in? Because, colleges generally like it when kids can overcome challenges. You wouldn’t believe some of the lengths kids go to get past hurdles. Sorry about your situation. Are you certain you have picked schools that will give the financial aid you need? And, that your family will support (especially, emotionally) you going to the schools you have in mind?
