My daughter has had difficulty getting the classes she wants/needs for spring semester. She plans on going to a particular stat class on the first day in hopes of picking it up. How actually is this done? Is if best to approach the professor before class? Or does the professor usually ask after taking attendance? Does the professor register you or do the student have to go somewhere? Thanks

I wouldn’t worry about it, it looks like your daughter knows what she is doing. They let students sit-in on classes during the first week and many do change their schedules and drop or add classes during that first week. She can ask other classmates or a professor or an advisor if she is curious how it’s done.

Papertiger87, I am not worried about it. My daughter asked me to post here to found out how its done.

The first week of a semester is the add/drop week. You can shop around during that week in hopes of fitting into a class that was filled during the registration period. I’m not sure if FSU has a waitlist for courses, b/c if you sign up for a w/l than those students that don’t show up on the first day get dropped and those on the waitlist can fill up those seats on the first day.

Also the reason why I said “don’t worry” b/c it came off as if your daughter already knew what she was doing and you were asking on here b/c you were wondering how she will get in those classes. So it’s all good I didn’t realize that she actually wasn’t sure how to get into that class.

I think you just wait until a spot opens up and then grab it through class registration on blackboard. Students usually go to the classes they are trying to add just so they don’t miss anything or get a feel for the class. I don’t think the professor can add more students than there’s allotted unless there’s someone that really needs to take a class that semester to graduate or it’s like a milestone they need to complete. Anyway, I could be wrong, but good luck it’s worth a shot to ask. Otherwise just watch the class like a hawk on your phone or on the computer and add the second someone drops. :)

I also forgot to say that there’s a required attendance policy for the first day so if someone does not show up then the professor drops them. The professor usually announces in class around what time that evening those students will be dropped so that those who hope to get in on the class can add it. Hope this makes sense. Good luck!

Professors can have the administrative people for the department add students even after the class is full. I know that this happened in one of my classes this semester, as Blackboard listed only 28 seats being available but nearly 40 people were trying to get a spot in the class (and I believe we ended up at around 35). It is usually up to the professor I would guess, although I haven’t encountered a professor that seemed to be against such an action.

Wallace, the steps to get a class seem to ultimately depend on the professor. For the first class there isn’t necessarily a set policy for what to do, aside from take attendance and drop those that don’t show up. I’ve had professor take attendance at the start of class, at the end of class, and in between. I’ve had professors then ask if anyone was skipped in the attendance, if anyone was attempting to add the class to their schedule, and I’ve also had professors not ask although this only happened once, and it was a class of over 100 people).

Honestly, the only real advice I can give is for your daughter to show up to the class she is trying to add when they meet for the first time, and talk to the professor at the end of class about adding if they don’t address it during class.
Typically the professor will go right away and turn in the attendance and seats will open up a few minutes after class is over, but this isn’t going to happen with every professor. I’ve had professors have the students go to the administrative people so that they could be added to the course for showing up, before the students that didn’t show were dropped. I’ve also had professors not do this, so like I said it seems like there really isn’t a set policy.

Thanks for the information everyone. Pasbal, I was hoping you would chime in, you seem to have a good handle on the ins and out of FSU. I will pass the information on. On the first day of registration, she ended up with only one class, but after relentlessly stalking she was able to get all the classes she wanted but one, stats. Hopefully, she can pick it up next week.

Which Stat class?

I can almost guarantee that a spot will open up in one of the sections if it’s like Intro to Stats (STA2122?). It might not be at a time she wants, but I can almost guarantee that spots will open.

Hopefully things work out though!

If it is indeed STA 2122 many of the classes are filled right now, however; I just checked and there’s two spots available in total.

STA2122 | 04858 | INTRO APPL STATISTIC | Professor: Becvarik, Rachel Ann Total Seats: 60 Seats Left: 1 Time: T R 02:00 PM 03:15 PM

And

STA2122 | 04856 | INTRO APPL STATISTIC | Professor: Griffin, Felicia R Total Seats: 60 Seats Left: ** 1** Time: T R 08:00 AM 09:15 AM

I’d nab one : )

There’s a course I’ve been trying to get into for over a month and a half now, lol, I’ve been checking almost everyday and no openings.

A psychology course [ CLINCL/COUNSEL PSYCH ] the only one taught next semester, so it’s rather difficult to get into.

But there’s many STA classes, I’m sure more spots may open up : ) I’d secure one at least if it’s a milestone course.

She actually can take either STA2122 or STA1013, both are fine for her major (criminology) and she has completed the prerequisite of MAC1105 for 2122. She would like a MW class because she already has two core courses for her major on TR (only sections offered). If she can add stats on MW, she feels her workload will be spaced out better than bunched up on two day. She has been watching Rivera’s two MW classes at 12:30 and 3:35 and also Abayomi (STA1013) at 3:35. She knows that there are openings in 8am classes, but is honest enough to say she will never go and it would be a bad idea for her to take. So hopefully, she will be able to pick up a MW section.

Rivera’s a really good professor. She’s from Puerto Rico and has a bit of an accent, but she does an amazing job making sure that everyone understands the material.

Hopefully your daughter gets the spot in the class that she wants.

@ Pasbal, I do apologize for going off-topic. But, How is professor Radha for Stats?

I haven’t heard anything about them. Sorry I can’t be more help than that, but really I haven’t heard much about any of the stat professors. Sorry!

My S had Professor Radha Bose for STA2023 this past semester. He said she is readily available to students, good at communicating, and teaches in an effective if uninteresting fashion. He said his class was as easy B though he finished with an A.

Thanks for the feedback FSUDAD1 :P

Lot’s of seats open for STA2023 as of this posting :)

A word of warning: I took this course recently and found it to be quite time-consuming. Be prepared to do a lot of practicing and studying.

I didn’t feel the same way about the class honestly. Maybe it was because Rivera didn’t really give much homework, but the class to me was not at all time consuming. Spend some time reviewing the notes each week or so, sure, but that’s about it.

Professors will differ though. If yours gave homework on a regular basis that will certainly make the class very time consuming.

Hey I actually had a question about drop and add. If I take a lot of AP classes and I’m not sure if I passed AP lit with a 4 (takes care of ENC 1101-1102 credit), and I end up picking the class, can I drop it with no implications if I do get the 4? How does it work?

You should get your AP scores before you start at FSU, so that you will have plenty of time to adjust your schedule (either in July when everything re-opens for registration, or during Drop/Add at the start of the semester) if you test out of a class.

This is assuming you start in fall and not summer. If you are starting in summer, you will likely be nearly done with the class before you get your AP scores. In that case, you shouldn’t register for either ENC course (although your advisor might tell you to do so), because it will be a waste of time if you end up testing out.

In the end, the best advice honestly is to just not register for a class you may be testing out of unless it’s absolutely mandatory that you have that class finished your first semester (I know many majors actually list completing ENC1101 as a requirement for your first semester).
