Adding Money to Cal Card

I heard that you can add money, and make your Cal 1 card a debit-like card. I was wondering, a relative of mine wants to add money to my account, and I don't know how to do it.

Do any of you know how you had money to your card, and if people other than you can add it?

Thanks

cal1card.berkeley.edu

mmm I'm not sure how someone else can add on to it though, but I'm sure there's a way. My roommate's mom added like $500 to her card at the beginning of the year, which sounds like a lot, but if you're going to use it for textbooks then that'll go fast. (But that means you'll be buying textbooks at the student store) I put like increments of $50 onto the card, for laundry, and food at the Free Speech Movement Cafe (which doesn't take meal points)

MAKE SURE TO NOT ADD TOO MUCH MONEY!!!!!! There is quite frankly ZERO point to having money in your Cal1Card, except for doing laundry in the dorms....you CAN'T get that money out until you graduate, so if you don't use it then you're stuck waiting for four years...use a normal debit card, they're accepted everywhere a Cal1Card is accepted...Cal1Card's are only accepted at a LIMITED amount of places on campus, and ZERO places off campus...

Cal1Card = rip off

so laundry is the ONLY way that money from Cal 1 card can be used?

No, it's not the ONLY way- but it's the most useful (you don't wanna be carrying 30 quarters with you when you go to do laundry). BUT, let me give you examples of other places where you can use your cal1card:

-FSC (free speech cafe for you newbies): where you can also use your debit card and/or cash

-Cal Student Store- where you can also use cash/debit...also, the books at the student store tend to be more expensive than Ned's (but that's not true for all cases). Personally, I buy my books on either amazon.com, ebay.com, or comegetused.com- it's cheaper and more convenient

-GBC (golden bear cafe): freshmen have meal plans so they won't be using their cal1card here...upperclassmen can use can and/or debit here as well

.....this is pretty much it

Wrong. You can't use a debit card at the FSM Cafe or the GB; only your Cal1Card. I'm pretty sure this also applies to the other campus restaurants (such as The Den).

Yeah, i think you're right dranakin. Thats the point of the cal debit card, you can use it on campus where a regular debit card is not usable.

Sorry, I'm a little confused. So is the Cal 1 Card not the same card you use at all the CAl Dining locations eg Crossroads?

It literally is the same card. But where you can use points, like at Crossroads, it will use points first. Then it will be used as the debit card, when there are no more points

but then again, at like gbc there's an atm machine so it's not too hard to take out cash right there.

it's definitely very useful for laundry.

whats a good amount to put on for laundry purposes only for say, 1 semester?

Assuming $4 for a wash and dry (I think it's actually $3.50 or something), then $50 should be fine for a semester, assuming one load per week (which is typical).

Actually i think its $2.50 (1.50 for wash and 1 for dry)

Ouch. The machines I use in my apartment complex is only 50 cent wash/25 cent dry.

that's not fair :</p>

it's free for a lot of my friends at other schools

Your friends are lucky

My bad, it's been a year and a 3 months since I've been in the dorms so my memory's rusty on the small things.

so the cal 1 card is the same as the ID card we got at calso? and the money you put in there is essentially combined with the meal points?

so if i wanna do laundry i can use the meal points..?

It is the same card, but you cant use meal points to do laundry. That would be cool, but you need to add money through your bank account to the card. You can only use points at the DCs and on campus food places. So if you run out of points, and you swipe your card at crossroads, it will take money out of your debit plan.

Damn, my mom put $1000 on the account. So now i see it's going to take me a while to use up that money.
