Adding poor performance remarks/excuses after submission of UC apps...

So I'm a prospective transfer from CCC to UCLA for 2012. I'm going for an impacted major but also TAPed it so I chose a backup major as BA in Anthro (which I don't plan to do either way...). I took 20 units this fall which was really no big deal, had high As in all of them bar the low A in a music course. My GPA prior to this was a 3.69 due to Bs in those five-unit calc classes (which are irrelevant to my major anyways) and a B in an honors class that was a pre-req to my major (f*d up prof).

Anyways... this semester a very traumatic event struck my already shaky home life, and things consequently went downhill academically. I ended up with 11 units of Bs, though there might be a mistake resulting in only 8 units thereof. I'm sure if I had talked with my teachers I could have easily finished the semester with a breeze.. but I didn't, and wasn't comfortable doing so until now, when it's too late. I don't mind detailing what happened in a private message, but I do mind saying loud-and-proud in this public eye. What I really want to know is if there's a way to add in the UC app January update anything that went bad/if they actually even care, or even if I should possibly talk with my department personally. My GPA was already low for an impacted major and now it's a 3.61 which rids of any last hope... I also don't want them to think average grades are due to me not knowing my limits on what I can handle. Any advice on how I can justify these mediocre grades specific to circumstances is greatly appreciated, either as a post or in a message.
