Adding schools for double bass

Music teacher just went over 'final' college list from S (senior) and thought it was a strong list/good match but suggested that he should also consider adding one or more of these schools to his list from among the following to round out his list for balance.

Any comments about how these compare, esp for double bass?

UMass
Boston College
Mannes
Temple
University of Ohio

Thanks!

Boston College?
There's no BM offered there.

There is also no "University of Ohio". There is Ohio University (in Athens Ohio...band program stronger than orchestral), and Ohio State University (in Columbus...don't know anything at all about that music program but it is the flagship state U). What kind of "music" is this bass player considering? Performance, music education, theory..what???

Temple has an excellent bass department - one person transferred into Curtis from there a couple of years back. I would recommend Rob Kesselman there. All of the studios will be pretty competitive for admissions. They also have a top notch jazz program. I don't know what the neighborhood is like around Temple these days, but it was not very appealing when I lived in Philadelphia many years ago. You may wish to check this out.

Mannes is very good if you are looking for a teacher in the Simandl tradition, not as good if you are into Rabbath and similar techniques. Orin O'Brien and Marji Danilow are both excellent players and the competition for their studios will be at a pretty high level. I don't know much about Jordan Frazier.

BC does not have much of a music program. If you really meant Boston University, they have one of the top bass programs in the country and it is extremely competitive.

UMass has a pretty good jazz program, but they are not particularly known for classical music.

As thumper says, there is no U of Ohio. If you mean Ohio State, I don't know much about Paul Robinson but his credentials (which appear sound) also suggest that he may be strongly into the Simandl school. If you mean Ohio, I also know very little about David Messina other than his bio is not all that impressive.

Many thx. We had spent much time researching/visiting the more well known schools and were not able to find out much from an insiders view. Very helpful, as always, TY!
