I am a Chinese-American, and have taken over 10 years of classes through a local Chinese school and also studied/volunteered abroad in China for a summer.
When I took the AP Chinese exam back in sophomore year, I went in cold and had no idea how the formatting would be like. With the typing, I had no idea how to use the character typing system and literally typed in one or two sentences before giving up (on average, one should have 200 characters+ for the email responses and general essay responses).

I got a 4 on the exam. I know I could have gotten a 5 had that not happened.
Would it be okay to write this next to the AP Chinese exam/score on my additional info:
"You may be wondering why I got a 4 and not a 5 on this exam considering my heritage and extensive intra-curricular experience with the Chinese language. This is because I was unsure how to use the typing system on the exam, and therein wrote nothing for the essay responses."

I wouldn’t mention it. The reader would probably wonder (as do I) why you went into the exam so unprepared. Your explanation does more harm than good, since you essentially admit that you were unprepared.

I honestly cannot recall any application that asked for AP scores. I do recall D just listing the ones that D wanted to as additional info. The AP scores were sent after D accepted the University for possible placement or credit.
