A general inquiry about a request for additional information as an FA applicant - is it standard practice for schools to request your tax transcript via an irs form?

Do all schools do this for FA information, or rather, requested for specific persons, for a specific inquiry?

responses appreciated, with warm regards,

Andover does. It’s was explained in the FA paperwork before we even started the process, if I recall correctly. They wanted a copy of 2007’s return initially. Then the W-2 as soon as we got it and then our 2008 return as soon as we completed it this year. I assume that’s standard.

Edited to add: At one of the ‘Ten Schools’ receptions, they encouraged prospective parents to ‘develop a relationship with the FA officer’ at your preferred school(s). And not to hesitate to let them know of any circumstances that might effect your need for FA.

I think NEskool is talking about an IRS form that grants the school the right to request a copy of your tax return from IRS directly. Andover didn’t but some other school we applied to did. I don’t think they are using it routinely though. They ask for it just in case they want a “closer look” at your return for some reason. I was told that they rarely needed to unless they couldn’t make out something in the return (implying possible fraud?).

I think all 4 schools we applied to asked for it. My son’s current school also asked for it as a routine practice. I was also told by one of the schools that in the 7 years they have asked for it, they have never once used it.

MX asked for it with the application- I think it’s a good practice- discouarges any less than honest applicants- not that anyone here would do that! :)

Thank you for responding.
It is good to have confirmation that this is done in general, even if not by all schools.

Certainly, I’m sure there has been the odd case of dishonesty (I would assume it was rare) which might be the reason it’s done in the first place, particularly with applicants requesting FA.
