Additional Info on Common App

wow.....
this whole time i thought that the
Additional Info box on the Common App
was for another essay...
After all, it IS in the writing section? So why not another essay?
Is it really just to elaborate or list all your ECs?
Or can you really use it for another essay??like, an essay on one of those ECs.
What if you're a person with not that many ECs but participated in each with depth
and you want to describe that experience?
(The short answer for elaborating on ECs (150 words) is too short)
Srry if this quesiton sounds stupid to anyone...... ha.......

You can write anything you want on that section, provided it reveals who you are without repeating what you’ve already listed/written on the other parts of the Common App. Some students attach an additional essay (Why ____ University, a personal struggle, etc…) as long as it lets the admissions officer see another part of you.

Others use that space for more ECs or attach a resume. Still others elaborate on one of their activities that’s extremely important to them (maybe that can tie in with your major/career).

If you have special cases you would like to let the admin know, this would be the place to put it. Perhaps you couldn’t take a challenging class b/c of scheduling conflicts, or you moved 4 times in the span of your junior/senior years and so the teacher recs aren’t strong, etc… Or do you have a special talent or passion that hasn’t been covered yet? If you have an amazing butterfly collection and have a vast knowledge of each species and you spend your weekends exploring forests and fields to add to your collection, and would like start a butterfly collection club at ___ university, include that!

Basically, anything that can strengthen your application and reveals another facet of you, the applicant. Just make sure to not sound whiny if you’re explaining a situation, or be redundant and paraphrase all your EC’s that you’ve already listed.

My S is using that space for an additional essay on the summer research work he did (for those colleges that don’t provide a good place for same in their supplemental essay section.)

thanks alot! that certainly helped
