<p>slightly touching on the "reason" in your essay would be a better approach. I dont think the admission people would like to read about excuses for grades. (and if you are explaining for a B or something they might even think you are too much of a perfectionist)</p>

<p>I see the additional info section as more a place to attach that news article that was published about you in your hometown newspaper or that blog you work on that gets a hundred thousand hits a day. (Know what I mean?)</p>
<p>If your reason was known by the guidance counselor or teacher and it was legitimate, perhaps he/she could include that information in their evaluation.</p>
<p>There's no "good reason" for bad grades, unless you were ill or had a death in the family or something. Don't call attention to the bad.</p>
