additional information on common app

what kinds of things do applicants usually put in the "additional information" box?

i wrote something (kind of like an essay but not really) explaining why i have had limited involvement in sports and is about three short paragraphs, would it be appropriate to put it here? i didn't want to write about it for my essays and it didn't fit the prompts anyway.

another question, i'm confused to whether it's appropriate to attach a resume to colleges.. i've heard people who do it but also others who say that colleges don't want to read them. please help thanks!!

I put stuff like family situation ($$$ poor), work exp., NHS involvement, some extracurriculars which didn't fit in the main parts, explanation of why I didn't take TOEFL (I'm international, but it wasnt really necessary because almost all of the schools told me I don't need it), and clarification of name (parents have diff. last names, so my SAT report and app name are different)

Just stuff like that

I put a description of my Girl Scout Gold Award project in the additional information section, as well as a paragraph about my summer job. I also sent a two page resume of my extracurriculars (the common app gives NO room to really describe anything EC-wise) separately.

thanks!! that was really helpful :) i was just wondering, how did you guys format the section? like did you title each piece of info (like "explanation of family name", etc) and then elaborate?

oh and also, did you put your resume in the additional information section?

I just separated each topic into paragraphs...no separate resume for me. I find it overkill as I don't have 50 pages of ECs, they're hard to come by in this part of the world and I basically was in everything lol. I had more ECs than the app. had room for so I included those extras in the add. info. I put work experience in the short answer along with music (fused them together somehow)

So if you are planning on sending an extra resume/activities list, you don't need to put that in the additional information section right?

My ECs were all fairly self-explanatory (varsity sport, speech & debate, student government) but my level of involvement wasn't. Also, I have a lot of community service that I need to put in my app somewhere, so I was thinking I would just mail a sheet in so that I could format it correctly.

But should I put it in the additional information section in ADDITION to mailing it?

I sent in an additional resume, and didn't repeat any of the stuff I'd be mentioning in my resume in my application.

For my Gold Award project description, I just had two brief paragraphs introducing it, and then the steps of my plan in a list format. On my resume, I had all my main extracurrics listed with dates of participation and hrs/w, w/yr, offices held, and bullets for details.

And, j07, put it one place or another. Putting it two places is superfluous.

I know it's a little off-topic, but -
Was it just me, or was it extremely difficult for you guys to estimate the hrs/wk and wks/yr that you spent on your ECs? For me, the time I spent varied so much from wk to wk (and from yr to yr, for that matter) that it was basically impossible to come up with an accurate estimate (except for things like sports and community service, where I knew how many hourse I spent).
Just felt like saying that. Now it sounds random but whatever.
