what is this "additional information" section on the commonapp all about? what is usually included here? do most people write stuff in it?

You can include a resume or activity list in the section, or explain anything on your application you feel the need to explain.

use it only if you have to. don't use it because u want to fill it./

what do people "explain" on it? could you give examples?

"Why I Got A G Instead Of An A"
"Please Consider That I Am Dyslexic"
"What "Attending A Three-Month Friar Camp" Really Means"
"Why There Is A Gap In My Academic Record"

anything that u felt coudnt fit in the conventional boxes and form fields...... financial situation and special cirumstances that u faced in school or soemthing......... EC ... shud be something u want adcom to know when their is no place in the rest of the application to insert it.

like i put why i only took two years of a language and why i am takind two study halls this year

My daughter is putting a few details about her main extracurriculars there because they don't really fit into the standard categories of the pull down common app. activity menu.

I have also heard of people basically doing a short "Why College XYZ" essay there as well, which might not be a bad idea, especially if a particular school is your absolute first choice. (Just remember if you're filing online to send the common app. with this info. to that school ONLY and to delete it before you send it to any other schools!)

If there is something about your record or background that you feel is important to clarify, this would also be the place to do it. Explanations about limited curriulum in high school is probably best handled by the guidance counselor however.

But, there is absolutely NO requirement to fill that section in.
