Hi guys, a few questions for those that already applied, or are planning to do it soon...

Did you decide to include artwork in your applications, in additional information section?
I notice some schools, such as Stanford, ask for the personal background or how would we contribute to the diversity of incoming class. I am guessing that art could be an addition but maybe I should at least provide a link or add the photographs in the additional information section?

What about research proposals, ideas, concepts? Should I include them? One thing is that professors probably won't have time to read it, on the other hand, it is a very crucial part of my application.

So I would use that section to state anything about yourself that makes you special but doesn't come out in your application. If your application already has a description of your research, why would you put it in your additional information section? Otherwise it's cool.

To avoid making it too long for faculty reviewers, here's how I would do it:

1) [a concise statement like] I do art: [insert hyperlink to your art]

2) I do research in x, y, z. I have done x, y, z. List citations (papers, abstracts, presentations, proposals).

I was thinking of independent research proposals. Experimental outline of a solution to a known problem with an unknown solution :). I think being able to produce those quickly, in mass quantities and well enough so they actually could be done are my main (only?) forte. On the other hand it would take a reviewers an hour to evaluate so I wonder if there is a chance i could present it. Maybe I should just mention that I design new research proposals and spare time and post links...

For that section, I added a blurb about how my national fellowship application made the school cut and was forwarded to national competition. Otherwise, everything else is pretty much covered in my CV/SOP.

I think I'm going to focus on the fact that I am a first generation college student. It's about the only thing I can think of that I haven't already mentioned in my SOP and that doesn't come across in my academic records.

Good luck to everyone applying to Stanford! I'm applying to the Dept. of Spanish & Portuguese... competitive!
