Additional letter of rec weight/importance

If you have a good one, does it help a little bit?

What do you mean by “good”? If it just recaps what is said in other LORs, then its affect is negligible. Just saying positive things adds nothing. Instead, if it offers something different about you not covered in other LORs, then yes, submit it. Otherwise, it’s “meh”

What is “different” ? can you give me an example?

For instance, a letter from a coach, minister or boss might address different characteristics about you than the ones discussed by your teachers because they are familiar with you in different circumstances than the classroom.

Sure. You have 2 standard recs telling what a marvelous student you are. The third extra letter is from the faculty advisor from the club you are President of that says she’s never seen anyone get so much accomplished with the club in her 20 years of teaching. Or its from the administrator of a local old-folks home telling how you set up a music program and have had students from your school play concerts there for the last 2 years.

alright! thanks :)

How are you going to send it in? I don’t see a spot for it on the Common App. I’m guessing one just mails it to the respective college’s admissions office?

Admissions said to just mail it.
