What would be the best way to submit a supplemental letter of recommendation to a college? Should the recommender simply send it to the college him/herself (in which case how does the college know that it is for the specific student)?

Usually they say this on the college website. I think they like it if the recommender sends it, that way there is no messing with the recommendation.

Just make sure they put your name/school/social security number or birthday on it so they can identify that it is for you. It should be sent separately. Some schools are pretty strict in that they don't want any additional recs, so you should check.

Many schools that designate number of recs don't want any more but submitting another usually won't hurt -- those that will accept it will look at it, those that won't will just ignore it. The recommender should send the rec directly to the schools office of admission and be sure to include your name, including middle initial, and idenitity of your high school. That will be enough for the college to get it to the correct file unless there is someone else in your high school with the same name and middle initial that is also applying there (and you should know if there is someone in your class that fits the same name criteria) in which case the recommender should also provide another piece of identifying information like your home address. For personal security reasons, I would not provide your SSN to the recommender and it is not necessary to do so.

My D included any supplemental recs with her resume. Nobody objected and everything stayed together. We made labels with her name/SS #/high school and placed one on each piece of paper submitted.
