<p>I'm getting a rec from my PI (the head of my lab). </p>
<p>I can't find somewhere on the common app to add rec from someone who isn't a teacher/counselor. Should I stick him in as a teacher? Or have him submit a rec separately? (But, in that case, since I'm applying to 5 private schools, I don't want to make him send 5 letters, even if they're identical.)</p>
<p>If your PI is not a teacher than he needs to send your rec separately. The common app only allows for teachers and counselors. If you address and stamp the 5 envelopes to be sent to the schools, then your PI can print 5, fold them and mail them.</p>
<p>Ask him to put your common app ID number on the top of the letters and your full name needs to be there somewhere as well.</p>
