Additional scholarships?

He definitely should change his listed major, because there are no department scholarships for “pre-law”. There might be department scholarships for poly sci or his other choice.

After changing his major, he should write Dr. Webb a polite note mentioning the confusion about major choice (pre-poly sci). He should mention that pre-poly sci has now been selected and that he’d want to be considered for any scholarhips. He should mention that UA is his top choice. I don’t know how to carefully word that finances are an issue, therefore a scholarship is needed to make attendance possible.

I just noticed on the Department of Education page that scholarship apps were due before 12/15. Unfortunately my d didn’t know she was accepted at that point so it looks like she’s out of luck. [College of Education :: Scholarships](http://education.ua.edu/student-services/scholarships/) Maybe some other university scholarships will come through otherwise does not look like she’ll be going to bama. :(

When did your D submit her scholarship app?

Some mistakenly thought that they couldn’t submit scholarship apps until after acceptance. That’s not true. A prospective student can apply for scholarships about 3 days after submitting the school app (as soon as the email comes with log-on info)

I would have my D send a note apologizing for the confusion that she thought she had to wait until after she was accepted to apply for a scholarship. She should express her strong interest in Bama. At Bama, an apology seems to go a long way. :)

She sent her university-wide scholarship app within a week of getting accepted. So I’m hoping those scholarships might make a dent in the tuition. Her college within UA says by 12/15 on their site. When I called today, the nice lady told me my d has missed the deadline and will have to wait to apply for Spring '11.

NJ mom…

I’m confused…

*My daughter has similar stats - 1280 SAT, top 8% of class, 3.8 UW, 4.6W - already received $3500/year scholarship from UA but hoping for something from more from her departmental college to make this a reality as not only is it still expensive for OOS, she’s also a twin. *

Since your D already received a scholarship from UA, doesn’t that mean that she applied on time? Or did the C of Ed require a separate app?

Sorry for the confusion, mom2collegekids… separate app that we were not aware of. My d got the automatic out-of-state merit scholarship for $3500 which I’m not sure had anything to do with that December deadline for scholarships or if there are other things that could still be coming - - ie. Diversity (Jewish from NJ - long shot but you never know), Girls in Science fields, etc. That’s what I’m hoping for at this point. What I didn’t realize is that each department also has their own scholarship application on their departmental page. The one for the College of Education was apparently due 12/15. Bummer we didn’t realize this until now. Should have gone through the UA site with a fine tooth comb but frankly I thought the university scholarship deadline covered all the departments, until I saw that page today. Oh well, guess not… The process could be a little more straightforward. I’m not sure that their admissions/scholarship page on their website ever said to check your college for departmental scholarships… :|

That is misleading. The regular scholarship is usually what’s needed for ALL scholarships - university-level, college-level, and dept-level. My son didn’t have to fill out a sep one for engineering. It does look like the College of Ed seems to “do their own thing” by having their own app. :frowning: I don’t like that!

I would be tempted to send Scholarships director Carolyn Rogers an email asking why there’s no mention on the main scholarship webpage that C of Ed has its own scholarship app.

I would copy/paste the words from Bama’s own scholarship page:

To select scholarship recipients, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the National Alumni Association, and **The University of Alabama’s undergraduate colleges and schools **use the scholarship application on myBama for freshman and transfer students and a separate application for currently enrolled students.

Their own webpage suggests that that is the one and only scholarship app needed for incoming freshmen. I would respectfully add in my email that since the general scholarship app was submitted on time, that the College of Education consider your D as well. I think a polite note would help.

I know that a polite note last year got Bama to correct something in regards to the Presidential scholarship.

I do agree that Bama would want more Jewish students. I wonder if the Hillel or the temple offers any scholarships to entice more Jewish students to Bama.

Thanks mom2college kids! I will try that. I felt it was a bit misleading but since I have 2 applying to colleges, I thought I may have missed something. I thought I was organized but it was entirely possible that I missed it. In any event, I’ll take your advice and give it a whirl and will be sure to post back. It can’t hurt! Do you happen to have Carolyn’s email address?

Carolyn Rogers email carolyn.rogers@ua.edu

I would probably also send a copy of the email to the C of Ed dept, too.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks again. Will let you know what transpires.

You’re very welcome! :)

Hope it all works out!!!

mom2collegekids - I’m going to PM you…

Ok… :)

M2ck, we talked to Dr. Webb this morning at the College of Arts and Sciences. She was very helpful. I wish we could attend the CSD this weekend. My son is captain of his wrestling team and he has an event this weekend. He is torn, but it’s his senior year and he’s pretty darn good! Dr. Webb suggested we come down soon and we will. Thank you so much for all of your advice on this forum. You are a wealth of information! Keep your fingers crossed that my son can get just a little more assistance.

Totally off the subject, do you or anyone know of a nice travel park in the Tuscaloosa area where we could bring our airstream down and leave it. That way, we can come down to visit whenever we please and have a place to stay! Just planning ahead!! Thanks!

Are you asking if there’s an RV parking area that you could rent and leave it? Or are you asking for some kind of residential spot to leave it?

Probably just a spot to rent and leave the RV, but also be able to use it year round when we come to visit. We have it at a campground in Tennessee at a local lake we like to play on! Won’t be near as much fun to go to the lake without my son, so we’re thinking we could move it to Tuscaloosa if he winds up there!

Ahh…

I googled…tuscaloosa rv parking… [tuscaloosa rv parking - Google Search](<a href=“tuscaloosa rv parking]tuscaloosa - Google Search”>tuscaloosa rv parking - Google Search)

Guess I should have done that also! I’ll make some phone calls. Thanks!
