Additional Teacher Recs for DHS?

Hey, I didn't send any teacher recs with my official application because they weren't ready yet. But now I have two GREAT recs and I don't know if I can send both. Help?

Sure you can. I would just send them as part of your DHS app if you have already been accepted to Tulane without them.

Do any additional recommenders have to fill out the official “scholarship recommendation form” or do they just have to send the letter?

They have to fill out the form. The additional recs would just be icing on the cake, so to speak.

Ok, thank you!

Quick question, if I sent in recs with my original app, can I use one of the same teachers again for the DHS rec? Or is that just redundant?

Personally I would try to get a new one. But since the DHS asks the teacher specific questions about you that might not have been covered in their initial rec, it certainly won’t be bad if you used someone that already wrote you a rec.

Is the total app considered along with the project for the DHS award? DD put together a nice project, but she also sent an arts supplement with her main app that showcases her creative side. Will that be reviewed again for DHS as well?

To the best of my knowledge (and I feel reasonably confident about this) an applicant’s entire record and all materials submitted to Tulane are considered. Now, how much of a difference a supplemental art portfolio makes I don’t know. Obviously (?) a science oriented student usually wouldn’t have something like that, but they might have other things like science awards or summer research. I strongly suspect that the backbone of a student’s record (GPA, strength of schedule, test scores, ECs and recs) are what determines if they get past the first screening. No matter how good a project is or supplemental materials are, if a student has 2000 SAT scores and a 3.4 UW GPA, they are not going to be considered for the award. Once it is narrowed down, though, the DHS application, the box project, and all the other things that can provide some separation between a few hundred amazingly qualified students will be what determines the winners.

I base the above on past observations, casual discussions with some of the Tulane personnel where many things were discussed (in other words we were not focused on the DHS process in particular, it was just part of a number of topics and I wouldn’t call it “official”), and some common sense that is informed by so closely following Tulane and these kinds of issues. Still, in the end, it is just my (hopefully informed) opinion.
