Hi all, i’m currently a junior here at UCLA and I’m trying to switch into the mathematics of computation premajor from my current major, pre computational and systems biology, mainly for the reason that I cant get into my current major. I want to know my chances of getting in based on my information:
I’m in my junior year here (I’m not a transfer) and my gpa for the math 31, 32, 33AB series is 2.725, above the required 2.5 gpa. My cumulative prereq GPA for math of computation is about 2.8, above the required 2.0; after this winter quarter, I’ll have completed math 61 and CS32 and can officially declare the major (assuming I get a C- in both those classes, which i’m pretty confident). Whats leaving my skeptical is that when I turned in my application to change my major to the math department, they said they would get back to me in 2-3 weeks and it didn’t seem like a “you meet the gpa requirements then you’re in” kind of thing when I inquired more, which worries me. I do have to notice and take into account I am a junior here at UCLA, meaning I have about 1.666 years left here to finish up all of the upper division requirements, and I’m already at 112 units. Another reason is my gpa - although it DOES meet their minimum requirements, I have to admit for math its pretty subpar. My math grades are B+, B, C+, C+, and C for 32A, 32B, 33A, 33B, and 115A, respectively; I fulfilled 31AB though AP credit. I am also currently enrolled in math 131A. What scares me more is that, planning all my classes out, I will be very close to the unit cap by the time I finish everything (but wont exceed!)
Math majors, thoughts and help would be appreciated. I’m not sure where to go if I don’t get in.
